Riverdawgs finish fourth at Trophy Case Tournament; ’Dawgs return to action today on road against Kerwins

BARTLESVILLE — The Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team finished fourth at last weekend's Trophy Case Tournament. The Riverdawgs lost for the second time in the tournament to Three Rivers, falling 8-3 on Monday.
The ’Dawgs (2-2) took a 3-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning on an RBI double by Panama's Isaac Burris, an RBI triple by Wister's Caleb Hill and a passed ball, but that proved to be their only inning with runs.

Poteau golfer third at Hudiburg Classic

MIDWEST CITY — After winning a four-hole playoff, Poteau's Hannah Ward was third at last weekend's 2012 Hudiburg Auto Group Oklahoma's Best High School Classic, which took place Sunday and Monday at John Conrad Golf Course. Ward, who won the Class 4A State Tournament on May 3 at Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner South Golf Course, shot a 75-71—146, two shots behind champion Anna Mikish of Choctaw (71-73—144). Tulsa Union's Nadia Majidi was runner-up (75-70—145).

Several duos win titles at Wayne Husak/Memorial Day Tournament last weekend

There were several local golfing duos who came away with titles at the Wayne Husak/Memorial Day Golf Tournament, which took place Saturday and Sunday at Choctaw Country Club.
Jason May and Sean Coyle took first place in the championship flight with a 130, finishing one shot ahead of Ronnie and Jonathan Burgess (131). Russell Vanhook and Robert McCuller were third (136), followed by Jeff Tadtman and Jim Janssen (139), Jerry Holton and Kelly Holton (140) and Max and Terry Manlove (145).

Wister baseball player MVP of Kiamichi All-Star Classic

WILBURTON — Wister's Clint Crane was named the Most Valuable Player of the 40th Kiamichi All-Star Classic Saturday afternoon.
Crane and the South defeated the North 12-5 at the Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball field. Crane's county victorious teammates were Talihina's Austin Lawson and Wister's Caleb Hill.
Representing the county in the North team were Poteau's Wilson Klutts and Blake Roley. How the local individuals did in the game was unavailable at press time.

Wister baseball team's fundraiser, and time for some free fishing days

First order of business is to let everyone know that the Wister Wildcats baseball team is selling tickets for an Oklahoma City RedHawks game, which will be June 23 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, for just $10 dollars each. That low price also includes a voucher for a free Redhawks hat. You can’t beat a deal like that!

Poteau Athletic Hall of Fame revival

It has been 10 long years since the Poteau High School Hall of Fame has had an induction ceremony to honor previous members of the Poteau High School fraternity of athletes, coaches and support staff. Friday night, May 25, the Hall of Fame held an induction ceremony that saw 41 former athletes, coaches and supporters enshrined. Only 5 inductees were not present due to prior commitments.
The induction ceremony was held in conjunction with the all school reunion, which is held every three years.

Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs open tournament 2-1

BARTLESVILLE — The Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team won two of its first three games in the Trophy Case Tournament.
After losing to Three Rivers 12-11 in eight innings Saturday afternoon, the Riverdawgs won their next two games, beating Jay 6-2 later that day, then beating Woodward 6-2 Sunday night.  
The ‘Dawgs, 2-1 on the season, played Three Rivers again Monday morning, and had to win four games to win the tournament.

The Poteau Baseball Camps will be next week at Carl Albert State College's Ival Goodman Field. The camp is for ages 7-10 and will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Monday. The camp for ages 11-15 will be 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Thursday. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday. Entry Fee is $40 per camper. Poteau offense scores three TDs in Red-White Scrimmage

Going into Friday afternoon's Red-White Scrimmage at Costner Stadium, new Poteau Football Coach Greg Werner knew there would be some inconsistencies on offense. While there were things like dropped passes, there were three scores (or plays which would have been scores under normal game-like conditions) by the time the final snap of the interteam scrimmage.
The three scores happened in the latter stages of the scrimmage. Kaydon Evans scored the first touchdown on about a 20-yard carry.

Local golfing trio to play in 2012 Hudiburg Classic

Three local high school golfers will participate this Memorial Day Weekend in the 2012 Hudiburg Auto Group Oklahoma's Best High School Classic, which will take place Sunday and Monday at Midwest City's John Conrad Golf Course.
Poteau's Hannah Ward and Addie Guthrie, along with Cameron's Kody Whitehead, will represent LeFlore County in the event.
