For a moment, I felt like I was Batman

July 27, 2012

Last Friday afternoon, my son, Jacques, and I went to Poteau Theater to see “The Dark Knight Rises.” Johnathan and Nathan Rice were there, and those boys made me sit on the very front row. I haven't sat on the front row at the movie theater since 1996 when I was late for “Twister” because that was one of the only seats left in the whole theater.

All-State Baseball Game atmosphere special to Wister Wildcat outfielder

July 26, 2012

TULSA — Wister outfielder Caleb Hill is used to playing for a lot of state tournament teams from his days playing for the Wildcats, which includes a championship team from May 2011.
But Tuesday was different for the recent Wildcat graduate. He participated in the Small School All-State Baseball game as a member of the East team, which beat the West 4-0 at Johnson Stadium, located on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
What was different?
“Playing at a college baseball stadium, maybe, and a lot of fans — I’m not used to it,” Hill said.
Another was playing with new people.

Controlled hunt results are in, and some more fishing

July 26, 2012

Earlier this week, I went online to see if any of my family members drew out on a controlled hunt put on by the Oklahoma Wildlife Department of Conservation. For the first time since I have been putting in, not one of us in this house drew out. If you have not checked your results, go to the wildlife department's website, and click the big box on its home page.

Poteau Lady Pirate completes busy week of hoops in Columbus

July 25, 2012

For the most part, most high school basketball players play two to three games a week. Poteau Lady Pirate basketball player Kaitlan Standridge did way more than that this past week.
Standridge, who participated in the U.S. International Sports Festival last week in Columbus, Ohio, played in 26 games in five days.

Sallisaw boys basketball coach coming home to Heavener

July 25, 2012

HEAVENER — An old saying goes, “You can't go home again.” Jeff Chronister begs to differ.
Chronister, who was coaching the Sallisaw Black Diamonds basketball team, took over the Heavener Wolves' coaching duties in June, replacing Scott Gregory — who became the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball coach in May.
Needless to say, it's been a unique homecoming for Chronister.

Poteau golfer plays in All-State Tournament

July 24, 2012

CATOOSA — Monday was a fun day for Addie Guthrie, and somewhat of a sneak preview, too.
The recent Poteau High School graduate and standout golfer got to play one last round of her prep career on Monday's All-State Golf Tournament at Cherokee Hills Golf Course.
Guthrie, who played alongside Bristow's Kayla Schroeder for the East Team, finished in a 2-2 tie with West duo Sarah Delong of Elgin and Bailey McCann of Anadarko in a Ryder Cup style scoring format.
The Rogers State University-bound player, who is joining the team as a walk-on, enjoyed her experience at All-State.
