I'm now in my third year to be a part of the LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. My first two years were very enjoyable, and I'm looking forward to a third.
If the seeding holds true, it will be a Poteau-Panama final. If that happens, it will be the first time they have met since their Aug. 28 contest at Poteau in which the Lady Pirates prevailed 1-0 in 14 innings in a game which lasted nearly 3.5 hours.
However, another team coming in hot is the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers, fresh off winning last weekend's Kiowa Tournament.
NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team had a rough end to its three-day stay at the University of Oklahoma Invitational on Saturday, losing 6-1 to the Jenks Lady Trojans and 6-2 to the Yukon Millerettes.
Still, the weekend was a good one for the Lady Pirates, who went 4-2 in the three-day event.
HOWE — The Wister Wildcats baseball team took home some hardware Saturday night as they defeated the Whitesboro Bulldogs 9-0 in the title game of the Howe Wood Bat Classic at Lions Field.
Wister reached the championship contest with a 1-0 victory over the Smithville Braves in championship semifinal, while Whitesboro got past the Cameron Yellowjackets 13-5 in the other semifinal.
All total, it was a good weekend for LeFlore County baseball as all four plaques from this year's event went to county teams.
KIOWA — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers softball team had a perfect weekend en route to winning the Kiowa Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Tigers blanked Wilburton 10-0 in the title game on Saturday, after beating the Lady Diggers 11-3 earlier in the day in the winner's-bracket final.
On Friday, Talihina beat Stringtown (9-0) and host Kiowa (5-0) — which features former Panama Lady Razorback Lauren Smith.
It had to go the distance, but in the end it was the Wister Junior High School softball team which brought home the latest fast-pitch county championship.
The Lady Wildcats defeated the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 3-2 in the winner-take-all title game Saturday afternoon at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Spiro forced the second title game by winning the first championship game 6-5 over Wister.
HOWE — In a Friday afternoon softball contest with early offense, the visiting Cameron Lady Yellowjackets were able to get past the Howe Lady Lions 7-5 to end the week.
Trailing 3-2 after an inning, the Lady ’Jackets scored three runs in the second inning for a 5-3 lead.
The Lady Lions cut the deficit to 5-4 after two innings, but they got no closer.
Cameron scored single runs in the third and fifth innings for a 7-4 lead, with Howe's final run coming in the fifth inning.
HENRYETTA — Heavener High School cross country runner Jose Farias placed in the Top 10 at Saturday's Henryetta Invitational. He was ninth in the boys' 5k race with a time of 18:58.
As a team, the Wolves were seventh with 211 points, finishing behind champion and meet host Henryetta (90 points), Keifer (97), Haworth (100), Quinton (130), Bristow (156) and Glenpool (191).
Besides Farias, Arturo Ortega was 28th (20:29), Cesar Gonzalez was 40th (21:50), Octavio Sanchez (22:37), James Cinocca was 56th (23:31) and Michael Bobo was 70th (25:45).
NORMAN — The Oklahoma Sooners home opener was a blowout as most expected. Florida A&M did keep the game close early, but the talented Sooners were just too much for the Rattlers and finished the game strong, eventually taking a 69-13 victory Saturday night at Owen Field.
It was a record-setting day for junior college transfer Damien Williams, who rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns, including an 89-yarder in the third quarter. His rushing total was the most for a player in his first game at home, and he is only the fourth OU player to rush for 100 yards in each of his first two games.
TULSA — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team had the feeling, at least in the opionion of its coach, Bill Blankenship, that it had a chance to win the season opener Sept. 1 at Iowa State, but didn't “keep our foot down” as Blankenship described his team's play in that game.
However, Saturday's Conference USA opener against the Tulane Green Wave at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium was different as Tulsa prevailed 45-10.
