Mother Nature was a big winner on softball diamonds where LeFlore County fast-pitch teams were competing in postseason contests.
The Poteau Lady Pirates were tied with the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs at 0-0 with one out in the top of the second inning in the Class 4A District Tournament in Poteau when the rains came. The game will resume at that point at 3 p.m. Friday. Then, Game 2 will follow at about 4:30 p.m. If both teams split, a third game will be needed, but it is not known when that game will take place since it is football night on Friday.
Last Friday night, the Poteau Pirates football team gave it its best shot, but came up short against the Sallisaw Black Diamonds. The Pirate players were disappointed about suffering their first loss of the 2012 season.
“I was really upset because I thought we could win the game,” said Derek Francis, senior defensive lineman. “It was a close game, but they pulled it off in the second half. We threw two interceptions, and that's what turned the game around. I was pretty sad because I really wanted (the win).”
The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team will enter this afternoon's Class 4A District Tournament in fine fashion after they run ruled the Westville Lady Yellowjackets 9-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates (27-7) will entertain the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs beginning at 4 p.m. this afternoon in the Class 4A District Tournament. Whoever wins the best-of-3 series will be the district champion, and move on to next week's regional tournament.
The Heavener Wolves are on a two-game winning streak since losing a disappointing home opener two weeks ago to the Hartshorne Miners. Since then, the Wolves (3-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3A-8) have posted wins over Gore (31-21) and Valliant (47-17) in last week's district opener.
“We feel like we've turned the corner, and we've put that loss behind us,” said Carl Lee, Heavener's new coach. “We're heading in the right direction — or at least we think we're heading in the right direction. We're not looking back at that loss. We're just trying to get a good winning streak going.”
Carl Albert State College Assistant Softball Coach Megan Young will give softball lessons at $25 per hour to girls up through age 18.

Sunday Couple Scrambles at Wolf Ridge Golf Course will take place at 2 p.m. Sundays.

Tryouts for the 2013 season for a 12-year-old Major USSSA baseball team will take place on four dates at the Spiro Little League Fields.
This time of the year gets my blood pumping. The start of hunting season is one day I look forward to every year. I am almost like a kid at Christmas when Oct. 1 rolls around.
As luck would have it, opening day is on a Monday this year, so I will have to wait until the evening hunt to climb into my stand this year.
I have different tree stands hung for whatever wind direction we have, and my cameras have captured some deer coming through. So, all I need now is for opening day to get here.
