PANAMA — The Panama Razorbacks were hoping that they could have a happy football homecoming Friday night at George Ollie Stadium. That was not the case.
The Wilburton Diggers spoiled homecoming for the Hogs with a 33-21 victory to begin District 2A-6 play.
SASAKWA — The good news for the Arkoma Mustangs was they were not mercy ruled as they were a week ago in their home opener against Maud. The bad news for them was they still suffered a loss.
The Sasakwa Vikings handled the Mustangs 64-24 Friday night in District C-4 action.
STIGLER — In the latest installment of the Highway 9 battle between the Spiro Bulldogs and the Stigler Panthers, this one went the way of the Panthers.
The Panthers took the District 3A-8 opener from the Bulldogs by a score of 48-16 Friday night.
MULDROW — Last week, the Poteau Pirates freshmen football team as well as the Pansy Kidd Middle School teams pulled off a sweep of Van Buren, Ark. They did it again Thursday night.
The freshmen more than doubled the Muldrow Bulldogs in winning 34-16.
The eighth-grade Raiders got their second straight win with a 28-8 victory, which came on the heels of the seventh-grade Raiders' 20-14 win.
All three teams return to action next Thursday at Sallisaw, with the seventh-grade game beginning at 5 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade game and the freshmen game.
As you all read this week's Gridiron Notes Column, all eight county football teams have began the most important part of their seasons — district play.
The 11-man teams began district play Friday night, while the county's 8-man teams — Arkoma and Bokoshe — did so two weeks ago, ironically against one another.
The week ended on a high note for the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team as the locals posted a pair of home run-rule wins over the Idabel Warriors 10-0 in four innings Friday morning after doing likewise to the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs 10-0 in four innings Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates will play their “Pink Out” cancer awareness game at 5 p.m. Monday against Red Oak. It will also be Senior Night, honoring Poteau's six seniors, Standridge, Wilson, Vise, Holdsworth, Kingery and Kylie Brown (who is out with a season-ending ankle injury).
ARKOMA — The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets softball team guaranteed itself another week on the diamond.
The Lady Yellowjackets doubled up the Arkoma Lady Mustangs 10-5 to win the Class A District Tournament Thursday afternoon.
The Lady ’Jackets (13-17) will find out on Monday where, who and when they will play in the Class A Regional Tournament, while the loss ended the season for the Lady Mustangs (13-16).
HEAVENER — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs handled the Heavener Lady Wolves to win the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday, posting the sweep by scores of 8-6 and 8-5.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-9) will find out Monday where, when and who they will play in next week's regional tournament, while the losses end the season for the Lady Wolves (12-19).
RED OAK — The season came to an end for the Bokoshe Lady Tigers softball team as it suffered two losses in the Class B District Tournament Thursday afternoon. The Lady Tigers lost 8-0 to McCurtain, then fell 12-0 to Red Oak.
KEOTA — The good news was the Howe Lady Lions softball team perhaps played their best games of the fall 2012 season Thursday in the Class A District Tournament against the homestanding Keota Lady Lions. However, it still was not good enough to advance onward.
Keota posted wins of 6-0 and 3-2 over Howe to win the district tournament and advance to next week's Class A Regional Tournament. The losses end the season for Howe.
