Poteau soccer teams split season openers at Mena

MENA, Ark. — The Poteau High School soccer seasons got underway Friday night with a split as the Pirates beat the host Mena Bearcats 5-0 behind Blake Williams' hat trick, but the Lady Pirates fell to the Lady Bearcarts by an identical 5-0 score.

Wister girls go 3-0 in Wilburton Festival

WILBURTON — The 2012 slow-pitch softball season got started in fine fashion for the Wister Lady Wildcats as they went 3-0 in the Wilburton Festival.
Wister beat Hugo 8-7, defeated Porum 7-4 and handled Vanoss 12-1.
In the victory over Hugo, the Lady ’Cats rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the opening inning with a single run in the first inning and three runs in the second inning for a 5-3 lead.
After the Lady Buffaloes scored once in the third inning to cut the deficit to 5-4, they regained the lead with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead.

Weekend High School Baseball Roundup

WILBURTON — The Talihina Golden Tigers opened their season Saturday afternoon with a 14-1, five-inning, run-rule victory over the Wilburton Diggers.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Golden Tigers broke the tie with a four-run third inning and a nine-run fourth inning.
Austin Lawson got the win, pitching a one-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Wilburton 8, Cameron 7: Friday afternoon in Wilburton, the Yellowjackets suffered their first loss of the season as the Diggers scored two runs in the home half of the seventh inning to get the win.

NOC-Tonkawa sweeps pair from Carl Albert softball team

TONKAWA — The Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks took a pair of softball games from the Carl Albert State College LadyVikings Saturday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 3-2 in an eight-inning contest.
The Lady Vikings will have back-to-back doubleheaders this week. This afternoon, they will entertain Rose State College in a 2 p.m. twinbill, then will welcome Western Oklahoma State College to town for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.

While we had a few baseball and softball teams open their seasons late last week, the rest of those teams who haven't yet will do so this week.
The schedule is listed below.
The Wister Wildcats, beginning the defnse of their Class 2A state championship, will face the Elgin Owls at 7 p.m. Friday at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
Whitesboro Games Canceled This Week
Due to the tragic death of Whitesboro Boys Basketball Coach Wayne Tucker, the school has canceled all its baseball and softball games this week.

Heavener softball player signs with Carl Albert

HEAVENER — For the last several fast-pitch seasons, Heavener Lady Wolves fans, and LeFlore County fans, have seen Logan Hinds be one of the dominant pitchers in the softball circle. This slow-pitch season, fans will see the Heavener senior in the outfield.
Next season, fans will likely see her do both for the Carl Albert Lady Vikings as Hinds signed a letter of intent with CASC Friday afternoon inside the Heavener High School library.
