VIAN — The 2012 portion of the Poteau High School wrestling season did not get started the way the Pirates had hoped as they lost a 60-15 dual decision to the Vian Wolverines Tuesday night.

Happy new year to everyone! I welcomed 2012 in the same way I have been spending New Year’s Day for the last several years, taking my boys to a ball tournament. My good friend, Gary Gibson, coached a seventh-grade team, and Dallas Ward and I coached a sixth-grade team for a little weekend action in Tulsa. We have lots of great parents from here who drive their sons all over the two-state area to get their kids all the playing time they can. I would like to thank them because it takes several kids to make a team. We couldn’t do it without each other.
There were no upsets on Day 1 of the 2012 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, which took place Monday at both Poteau High School's Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse and Pansy Kidd Middle School's Upper and Lower Gyms.
At Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, boys opening-round games saw Pansy Kidd Middle School handle Monroe 64-13, Heavener edge Leflore 30-23 and Talihina nip Pocola 22-20.
As for girls games at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, Wister held off Whitesboro 36-35, Howe defeated Leflore 58-10 and Heavener got past Arkoma 42-14.
