Pirates defeat Red Tornadoes to gain semifinal spot thanks to last-second field goal; Poteau will play winner of Saturday's Oologah-OKC Douglass game next week

November 23, 2013

It is pretty much a consensus that Friday night's Class 4A state quarterfinal victory for the Poteau Pirates over the defending state champion Clinton Red Tornadoes is perhaps the biggest win the Pirates have ever had on the hallowed grounds of Costner Stadium. The Poteau Pirates in all reality dominated the Red Tornadoes. Poteau kicked a 20-yard field goal with four seconds left in the game for a 10-7 win to put the Pirates in the Final Four against the winner of today's Oologah-Oklahoma City Douglas winner in next week's state semifinals.

Poteau Pirates welcome Clinton Red Tornadoes for state quarterfinals

November 22, 2013

By the Poteau Pirates football team winning District 4A-4 this season, it meant that there would be two home playoff games — assuming they would win the first one.
The Pirates won that first game, handling the Cleveland Tigers 48-7 last week at Costner Stadium.
“It was a good night for us,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “Anytime you enter the playoffs and win [a game] big, it's always awesome. It was a great night for our kids, coaches and our program to get a playoff win.”

Poteau, Arkoma seek state semifinal berths tonight; Talihina goes for spot in state quarterfinals

November 22, 2013

Then there were three. Last week, LeFlore County had five of its eight high school football teams make the playoffs. Three of them made it to tonight's second week of postseason play.
Poteau (Class 4A) and Arkoma (Class C) will each face perennial football powers tonight as the Pirates meet Clinton and the Mustangs face Shattuck. Both teams will seek a berth in next week's state semifinals.
The Talihina Golden Tigers will meet Hominy, which handed them a 58-12 loss in the Class A state semifinals in 1982 at Doc Robinson Stadium — which will be the site of tonight's second-round playoff game.

Bandit team's bake sale — and a happy Thanksgiving to you all

November 22, 2013

My fifth-grade Bandit League football team had a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday outside Atwood's. I went for a while to help the ladies set up, and keep an eye on my players.
After we got everything going, my wife, Jenny, wanted me to go look at some Christmas lights inside the store. I grabbed a bag of popcorn and a few roasted peanuts on my way out — I mean, life is good.

3-2-1 Go! Gun season is on like Donkey Kong

November 21, 2013

The long-awaited deer gun season is finally here. Hunters all across the state — and especially here in LeFlore County — have been patiently waiting an entire year for this weekend to come around again. Our necks have been swelling up, and our trigger fingers have been itching. We all want to bring home the prize to feed our families.
I know the kids at school are ready for a week off, too. Many of them plan to do some hunting, probably not all of the days, but there will be plenty that make memories in the woods with their family and friends.
Have a great week!

LEFLORE — The Red Oak basketball teams made their first trip to play on the newly-christened Nadine Carpenter Court on Tuesday night and left victorious over the hosts from Leflore.

The Lady Eagles soared above the Lady Savages for a 70-34 victory in the first game of Tuesday night's doubleheader.
