The Monroe Lady Eagles qualified for the 2013 Organization of Rural Elementary Schools State Tournament by winning the Division IV Tournament on Thursday in Fanshawe. Before the weekend ended, they were joined at state by four other LeFlore County teams.
In the Division II Area Tournament at McAlester’s Frink-Chambers Middle School, the Hodgen teams did it the hard way, but made this week’s ORES State Tournament.
For the third straight year, the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team won the Class 4A District Tournament, beating the Stilwell Lady Indians 49-40 Friday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
“It was exciting,” said Shelby Standridge, senior guard. “It feels good.”
The Lady Pirates (17-7), who will play the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers at 6:30 tonight at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Gibson, have enjoyed the newfound success, which has shown signs of happening for the last two previous seasons.
Lake Wister and Talimena state parks have joined to promote a heart healthy hiking program this year.
A hike will take place each month, alternating between the two state parks.
The next hike will take place at Lake Wister State Park's Wards Landing Campground on March 9.
All hikes will begin at 1 p.m. Bottled water will be provided at each month's hike.

One of the biggest events in the world of fishing will take place this week at Grand Lake. The BASSMaster Classic starts Friday and ends Sunday.
There will be several Oklahoma fishermen in the field for this event including, Edwin Evers and Tommy Biffle. The winner will bring home a $500,000 check. The weigh in will be at the Bank of Oklahoma (BOK) Center in Tulsa.
