Heavener boys in title game of Stilwell Tournament

STILWELL — The Heavener Wolves soccer team reached Friday’s title game in the Stilwell Tournament with a pair of wins on Thursday, beating Collinsville 2-1 in a shoot out and defeating Hilldale 3-1.
The Wolves played Tahlequah late Friday for the title.
Heavener’s girls suffered three losses over two days to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Lady Wolves, who were undermanned due to injury and a player gone for a family matter, lost 2-0 to Collinsville on Thursday, then lost 3-0 to Hilldale and 1-0 to Porter Consolidated on Friday.

Poteau girls win Thursday’s Wilburton Invitational; Poteau Invitational slated Tuesday afternoon

WILBURTON — The Poteau Lady Pirates track team made it 2-for-2 in meets this season as they won the Wilburton Invitational on Thursday. Poteau had 147 points, with Vian a distant second (104 points).
The Poteau Invitational will begin at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday at Costner Stadium.

CASC softball team loses twice to NEO on Thursday afternoon

MIAMI, Okla. — The Carl Albert State College softball team dropped two games Thursday afternoon to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 12-0 and 5-0.
CASC will face Seminole State in Shawnee in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.

Pitcher throws perfect game

It makes no difference the level of baseball, a pitcher gets a thrill when throwing a perfect game. Just ask Spencer Wells.
Wells, who pitches for the Poteau Rebels OK Kids baseball team, did just that, throwing a perfect five-inning game as the Rebels defeated the Spiro Muddawgs 5-0 in the title game of the 2013 OK Kids Preseason Tournament on Thursday night at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Wells faced the minimum 15 batters in five innings with 11 strikeouts.

Spiro beats Pocola, Howe; Indians rally past Lions

POCOLA — In a three-way baseball festival that was all LeFlore County on Thursday, the Spiro Bulldogs were the big winner on the day.
The ’Dogs defeated the host Pocola Indians 4-3 and handled the Howe Lions 13-5. The middle game went to the Indians as they rallied past the Lions for a 3-2 victory.

WHITESBORO — Wister pitcher Colby Turnipseed pitched a no-hitter as the Wildcats blanked the Leflore Savages 13-0 on Thursday. The ’Cats then used a five-run fifth-inning to rally past the host Whitesboro Bulldogs 8-4.
The ’Dogs got past the Savages 6-2 in the other game of the day.
Talihina 17, Coalgate 8: In Talihina, the Golden Tigers, leading 10-8 in the fifth inning, used a seven-run fifth inning to end the game by run rule, since Talihina's lead was at nine runs in the fifth inning.

BUFFALO VALLEY — The Howe Lady Lions softball team suffered two losses to begin the two-day Buffalo Valley Festival. The Lady Lions lost 10-8 to the Clayton Lady Bulldogs, while suffering a 10-0 shutout at the hands of the Kiowa Lady Cowgirls.
The Lady Lions did not get as chance to play their final two games in the two-day event as their contests with Buffalo Valley and Battiest were rained out on Friday with no make-up dates set.
Smithville 7, Whitesboro 2: In Smithville, the Lady Braves jumped to a 4-0 lead after an inning, and never trailed.

No. 2 Poteau soccer boys knock off No. 1 Fort Gibson; third-ranked Lady Tigers beat Lady Pirates

With the top spot in the Class 4A state soccer poll at stake, the second-ranked Poteau Pirates will likely be the new No. 1 next week after they knocked off No. 1 Fort Gibson 3-2 in a shoot out Thursday night at Costner Stadium.
The Lady Pirates also had a shot at an upset, facing No. 3 Fort Gibson. However, the Lady Tigers prevailed 4-1 in the first game.
Both Poteau soccer teams return to action on Tuesday with district road games. The Pirates will travel to face the Hugo Buffaloes, while the Lady Pirates head north to meet the Keys (Park Hill) Lady Cougars. Both games will begin at 5 p.m.

HEAVENER — The Poteau Pirates used three pitchers to shut out the Heavener Wolves 7-0 Thursday afternoon.
Michael Didway threw the first five innings with seven strikeouts. Roger Barcheers pitched a scoreless sixth and Mason Grimm did likewise in the seventh inning.

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Poteau golfer Cody Shore won his second tournament of the season, but he had to go a little extra to get the win.
Shore had to birdie the final hole to force a sudden-death playoff with Fort Gibson’s Wesley Jackson, tied at 73 — which the Pirate golfer won — to capture the top medalist honor at the Roland Invitational, which took place Thursday at Ben Geren Golf Course.
As a team, the Pirates were second with 328, as Jackson’s Tigers won the team title with a 315.
