WISTER — Wister Wildcats baseball pitcher Tyler Gibson has been part of one of the best high school baseball programs in the state. Now, he’s hoping to be part of another one at the college level.
The Wister senior signed a letter of intent with Seminole State College on Tuesday afternoon at the high school gym.
I watched the LeFlore County Junior High Basketball Tournament last week. Sometimes it was boring, and sometimes it was exciting.
Looking at those puppies, one can see that within a couple of years they will mature both physically and athletically.
Overall, I think the biggest story of the tournament would be the rebirth of basketball at Monroe. I believe the key has to be that the Eagles and the Lady Eagles have bought into the Casey Hemphill way of doing things, and they are learning to fly all over again. The Lady Eagles played for third place, while the Eagles played for fifth place.
BROKEN BOW — The Poteau Lady Pirates made it a 2-0 weekend as they posted a come-from-behind 51-48 win over the Broken Bow Lady Savages on Saturday.
Trailing 27-16 at halftime, the Lady Pirates outscored the Lady Savages 25-5 in the third quarter to take a 41-32 lead into the final period.
Bokoshe 57, Wister 35: Friday night in Bokoshe, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 12-4 lead after a period to take control of the game.
BROKEN BOW — Just after getting a thrilling road win against the Heavener Wolves on Friday night, the road was unkind to the Poteau Pirates on Saturday as they lost 62-58 to the Broken Bow Savages.
The Pirates fell behind 17-16 after one period, and trailed 32-27 at halftime.
Trailing 44-34 after three periods, the Pirated did outscore the Savages 24-18 in the final quarter, but the rally fell short.
Panama 81, Cameron 75, 2 OT: Friday night in Panama, the Razorbacks got homecoming off on the right foot, and did so in dramatic fashion.
HEAVENER — All that matters is leading at the final buzzer. Just ask the Poteau Pirates.
After trailing for the majority of Friday night’s game against the Heavener Wolves, up stepped an unlikely hero for the Pirates.
Junior Jarrett Lowrimore went coast-to-coast for the game-winning layup with two seconds left to give the Pirates a 44-43 victory.
The Lady Pirates gave Poteau a sweep on the night as they handled the Lady Wolves 62-42.
LONE GROVE — The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers brought home some hardware from Carter County near Ardmore. The Lady Golden Tigers defeated the host Lone Grove Lady Longhorns 50-42 to win the consolation championship of the Lone Grove Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Gary Scott Center.
The news was not as good for the Golden Tigers, who lost to the Marlow Outlaws 63-60 in overtime in the consolation finals.
The Wister Wildcats and the Howe Lady Lions were each awarded the top seed at the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, and they proved Saturday night at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse why they were deserving of their seeding.
The Wildcats had little problem in beating the Heavener Wolves 47-28 in Saturday night's title game. Both teams reached the championship contest with Friday night semifinal wins at Howe — Wister beat Spiro 45-19, while Heavener edged Poteau Pansy Kidd Middle School 32-31.
It was quite a week last week as the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High County Tournament took place, and let me just say thank you to Karen Larosa, Monroe Public Schools superintendent, and coach Casey Hemphill for all their help with getting me daily scores so I could put an updated bracket each night on the Poteau Daily News website.
Congratulations to the Wister Wildcats and Howe Lady Lions for winning county titles this season.

MUSKOGEE — Some hardware from Muskogee County came home to LeFlore County on Saturday night.
The Spiro High School basketball teams swept the title games Saturday night at the Muskogee Bedouin Shrine Classic, each beating undefeated Oktaha in the finals.
The Bulldogs got past the Tigers 61-58 in Saturday night's title game, after knocking off the Haskell Haymakers 72-51 in Friday night's semifinal.
