Weekend High School Girls Basketball Roundup

STILWELL — The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered an 87-85 overtime loss to the Stilwell Lady Indians on Friday night in a very physically played game in which sophomore post player Allison Stone suffered a dislocated finger in the second period and will be out until the Jan. 4 home game against Atoka.
The Lady Pirates led 42-41 at halftime after trailing 18-16 at the end of the opening period, but were outscored 16-15 by the Lady Indians in the third quarter to knot the game at 57. Each team scored 22 points in the final period to tie the score at 79 to force overtime.

Poteau High School alumni basketball game set Dec. 30

The Poteau High School basketball program is having an alumni basketball game Dec. 30 at the Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The match-ups will have odd years vs. even years.
The girls game will start at 6:30 p.m. with boys game to follow.
The fee for alumni to play in the game is $3. To be considered alumni you must have played at least a year of Poteau High School basketball.
Admission is $3 for adults and kids are free.
For those interested, pre-registration is greatly appreciated.

2013 high school football season will be one of the best

I know that one week ago today, Poteau Pirates fans were lamenting a 40-0 loss to the No. 1 Anadarko Warriors in the Class 4A state title game, while the night before saw the Talihina Golden Tigers lose to No. 1 Ringling in the Class A state semifinals.
However, those two losses can't take away from the fact that 2013 will be one of the finest high school football seasons for LeFlore County.

Poteau wrestlers lose heartbreaking road dual to McAlester Buffaloes; Pirates wrap up own two-day tournament Saturday

McALESTER — What Poteau wrestling coach Jack Hornbuckle called a “fluke blood time forfeit,” the Pirates suffered their first dual loss of the season in a 40-36 setback to the homestanding McAlester Buffaloes on Thursday night at Brumley Gym.
The Pirates will conclude their own two-day tournament Saturday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. Matches are slated to begin at approximately 10 a.m.

Pocola teams split home games with Quinton

POCOLA — The Pocola High School basketball teams will enter the Christmas break with a home split with Quinton's teams Thursday night at the Pocola Gym.
The Indians rebounded from Monday night's 15-point loss to Howe by spanking the Savages 67-45, but the Lady Indians fell 56-37 to the Lady Savages.

Howe boys make Gold Bracket title game; Leflore girls win consolation championship at Eastern Oklahoma State College Classic

WILBURTON — The Howe Lions made sure it will be an all-LeFlore County title game Saturday night for the Gold Bracket title at the Eastern Oklahoma College Classic.
The Lions routed the Cave Springs Hornets 80-53 Thursday night in the championship semifinals at EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse.
The Lions (11-0) will meet the Leflore Savages (10-1) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at EOSC for the championship. The Savages got a bye into the championship game when Stuart did not return after the final three days of the EOSC Classic when it was canceled due to the wintry/icy weather earlier this month.

Pirates get basketball season started tonight at Stilwell

One week ago this afternoon, fans were sending off the Poteau Pirates football team on its way to play for the Class 4A state title. Tonight, the Pirates will get to begin their basketball season with an 8 p.m. contest at Stilwell. The Lady Pirates (2-1) will play the Lady Indians at 6:30 tonight.

PMAC's 'Operation Christmas Bicycle Program'

There's only five days left until Christmas and I haven't bought a cotton-picking present yet. I've got to get in gear. All guys wait until the last minute anyway ... that's how God wired us, but we always get it done.
The Poteau Men's Athletic Club [PMAC] didn't waste any time with its “Operation Christmas Bicycle Program.” The organization got money donated and bought 20 bikes and put all of them together in just three days, and delivered them to the Poteau Upper Elementary for the LeFlore County Youth Services to give out this Christmas.

Heavener teams garner top seeds in 2014 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament

The Heavener Wolves and Lady Wolves garnered the top seeds in next month's LeFlore County Junior High Tournament at Wednesday night's seeding meeting at Western Sizzlin'.
On the boys side, Heavener is the top-seeded team, with Monroe second, Wister third, Talihina fourth and Howe fifth.
The next five seeds are Whitesboro sixth, Poteau/Pansy Kidd Middle School seventh, Pocola eighth, Spiro ninth and Arkoma 10th.

Heavener girls suffer first loss of season, fall in Gary Ford Invitational title game to Acorn; Lady Wolves, Wolves will make up last weekend's road games at Idabel on Saturday afternoon

HARTFORD, Ark. — The Heavener Lady Wolves basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday night, losing 79-56 to Acorn, Ark., in the title game of the Gary Ford Invitational.
The Lady Wolves fell behind 27-14 after a period and could never get over the hump.
The Heavener teams will make up last weekend's road games at Idabel on Saturday afternoon. The girls' game will take place at 1 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 2:30 p.m.
