Pocola looks to end losing streak Friday against Wilburton Diggers

Things have been rough the last two weeks for the Pocola Indians football team, losing 59-0 to Vian and last week 59-14 at home to Hugo. However, injuries have had a big part of that.
“We're about 90 percent we'll get two of our kids back — Anthony Clopton and Hayden Hindmarsh,” Pocola coach Rick Lang said. “With them back on offense and defense, that will make us better. [Quarterback] Johnny [Satterfield] is about 80 percent, but he's got to give it a go. It's a must win for us. Our season is on the line. We have to take them one game at a time, but we've got to make it happen this week.”

Talihina returns to district play with showdown against Sallisaw-Central

The Talihina Golden Tigers football team got out of Saturday night's game against the McAlester junior varsity what it needed to, since there was a possibility of an open date when the original opponent, Union Christian, Ark., dropped out. In the end, the Golden Tigers prevailed 41-13 and found out some of their strengths and weaknesses.

Heavener boys only runners who get to run Chili Pepper Invitational; cold rain washes out remainder of event

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The good news was the Heavener Wolves cross country team got to run in Saturday's Chili Pepper Invitational.
However, due to the cold rainstorm that moved through, the Lady Wolves did not get to participate as the rest of the event was rained out. Poteau's runners were scheduled to participate, but did not go.

Heavener junior high girls run well at Acorn Invitational meet

ACORN, Ark. — The Heavener Lady Wolves junior high cross country team ended its season on a strong note as three finished in the top 10 and six in the top 20 at Tuesday's Acorn Invitational.
Barbara Johnson was fifth (10:22) to lead the way on the 1.5-mile course, followed by Iris Martinez in seventh (10:28) and Ruby Cope ninth (10:46) as they made the top 10.
Fatima Baez was 12th (11:070, Teresa Duncan 15th (11:12) and Andrea Cinocca 17th (11:24) made it into the top 20.

Poteau senior linebacker can't wait for Friday's big game against Fort Gibson

On Sept. 27, the Poteau Pirates football team perhaps won its biggest game in some four years when they knocked off the Sallisaw Black Diamonds 34-9. Now, there's another big game on the horizon, that being at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Fort Gibson. It will pit the sixth-ranked Pirates (5-0 overall, 2-0 in District 4A-4) against the seventh-ranked Tigers (4-1, 2-0)
“It's exciting,” Poteau senior linebacker Carlos Aguilar said. “It's a huge game. All glory to God, He's given us this opportunity to be in this type of game. Our offense is one of the best. I'm excited about this game.”

Rough night of football for Poteau freshmen, PKMS teams at Vian

VIAN — Things did not go well for the Poteau Pirates freshmen football team, nor the Pansy Kidd Middle School squads Tuesday night as they all lost to host Vian.
The Wolverines took the freshmen game 34-12, the eighth-grade contest 28-22 and the seventh-grade game 54-0.
All three local teams return to action next week against Broken Bow. The Pirate freshmen will travel to Memorial Stadium to face the Savages at 6 p.m. Monday.
The PKMS teams will entertain the Savages at Costner Stadium beginning at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.

Poteau JV football team falls to Sallisaw

The Poteau Pirates junior varsity football team suffered its first loss of the season Monday night, falling 7-6 to the Sallisaw Black Diamonds.
The Poteau JV will return to action in a road game at Memorial Stadium against the homestanding Broken Bow Savages at 7 p.m. Monday, right after the freshmen's game.

Poteau Bandit League teams go 3-1 against Van Buren White

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Poteau Bandit League teams went 3-1 on Saturday against Van Buren White.
The sixth-graders won 28-0, while the fourth-graders and third-graders won by identical scores of 13-6.
The only blemish on the day came in the fifth-grade contest, which was won by Van Buren White 34-0.

Panama Razorbacks look to rebound Friday night against Antlers Bearcats

It was a rough home loss last week for the Panama Razorbacks, who lost 34-0 last Friday night to the Hartshorne Miners at George Ollie Stadium. However, this week, it's a new opponent — the Antlers Bearcats — and an opportunity to rebound.
“That game is in the past, and the kids know they can't do anything about it,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “We're moving forward, preparing for this game.”
The Bearcats (2-3, 0-2 in District 2A-6) will come calling on the Hogs (3-2, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at George Ollie Stadium.

Arkoma looks for second big road district victory Friday against Midway

The Arkoma Mustangs football team appears to be on a mission. For the second straight week, the Mustangs dominated a District C-4 opponent, with the latest being a 48-0 rout of Southwest Covenant on Friday night in Yukon.
“It was a huge road win for us,” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “They've got a good team. Our defense was fantastic. We had a couple of goal-line stands to preserve our shutout, one of them came on the first drive of the game. We executed the game play perfectly. We couldn't have played any better. It was a great win.
