RED OAK — The Leflore Savages baseball team suffered a 6-2 loss to the Red Oak Eagles in the opening round of the Class B Regional Tournament on Thursday.
The Savages (18-11) can still make it to state as the consolation champion by winning twice today. Leflore will play the loser of Thursday's Boswell-Caney game at noon today, with that winner playing the loser of Thursday's regional championship game at 2 p.m. for the consolation championship, and a berth in next week's Class B State Tournament.
While the Poteau Pirates will hope for a happy homecoming tonight when they entertain the Stilwell Indians at 7:30 p.m. at Costner Stadium, last week was a pretty happy one, too, for the locals after the Pirates ended a six-game losing streak to the archrival Sallisaw Black Diamonds in a 34-9 victory.
“It was a good win for us,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “It was a good win for our program. It was a good win for the town. Hopefully, that can propel us to bigger and better things. It was a big deal for us to win.”

For the first time since the tailgate party that took place on the first day of football practice in August, the Heavener Wolves will finally get to play a game at Harvey Stadium, which they will do at 7:30 tonight in their District 3A-8 contest against the Roland Rangers.
The game was to have been their homecoming game, but it has been changed to Oct. 17 when the Wolves entertain the Spiro Bulldogs.

Tuesday was the opening day of deer archery and bear archery season. If you have not bought your bear tag, you are out of luck because you must buy it before archery season starts.
I do not agree with us having to buy a tag by a certain date to kill a bear, but that is the rule so I will not buy one. I may try to hunt a bear in the future, and the wildlife department is giving us more of an opportunity to kill one — but this year is not the year that I will hunt them.
