Tournament champions crowned last weekend

LeFlore County basketball did rather well last weekend in tournaments. The Howe Lions and the Arkoma Mustangs won the Green Valley Conference Tournament, while the Spiro Bulldogs claimed gold in the Wilburton Tournament. As of press time, it wasn't known if the Heavener Lady Wolves won the Gary Ford Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Hartford, Ark., to give the county a fourth champion.
Poteau's girls were second at Wilburton, while Panama's girls were runners-up in the GVC.

LEFLORE — The Leflore Savages won for the second straight night in a row as they handled the Porum Panthers 45-22 Friday night on Nadine Carpenter Court.
Leading 24-15 after three periods, the Savages outscored the Panthers 21-7 in trhe fourth quarter to win going away.
Whitesboro 60, Clayton 47: In Whitesboro, the Bulldogs led from start to finish, taking an 18-11 lead after a period which became a 32-21 halftime advantage. Whitesboro took a 49-31 lead into the final period.

Friday's High School Girls Basketball Roundup

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs defeated fellow Lady Bulldogs from Clayton 49-31 Friday night.
Whitesboro only led by four points at 17-13 at halftime, but the LeFlore County Lady Bulldogs outscored the visiting Lady Bulldogs 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 34-18 lead into the final period.
Porum 58, Leflore 47: In Leflore, trailing 31-25 at halftime, the Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Savages 19-11 in the third quarter to take a 44-42 lead into the final period — in which Porum outscored Leflore 14-5 to seal the deal.

Despite Saturday's title game loss, 2013 was still a banner for Poteau Pirates football team

I was not even born when the Poteau Pirates lost the Class B title game to Fairview in 1946. I was 2 years old when the Pirates were defeated by Sayre in 1950 Class B title game.
My mother was also a Pirate fan, and she told me everything she remembered about both games, and I have always wanted to see the Pirates play in the game for the gold ball. I had that chance Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium.
The Pirates played for their first state football title in 63 years Saturday at OSU against the top-ranked Anadarko Warriors.

Spiro boys beat Red Oak to win Wilburton Tournament; Lady Eagles fly past Lady Pirates for girls title; Spiro Lady Bulldogs claim third place

WILBURTON — The Spiro Bulldogs used their athleticism to claw the Red Oak Eagles 50-39 in the title game of the Wilburton Tournament on Friday night at the Wilburton Gym.
The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered their first defeat of the season in the game prior, losing 55-42 in the girls title game to the Red Oak Lady Eagles to come in second place.
The Spiro Lady Bulldogs claimed third place by handling the host Lady Diggers 44-30.

Howe boys, Arkoma girls win 2013 Green Valley Conference Tournament

The Howe Lions repeated as Green Valley Conference Tournament champions, beating another group of Lions from Keota 69-39 Saturday night in the title game at the Panama High School Gym.
The Arkoma Lady Mustangs won the girls title after beating the Panama Lady Razorbacks 63-58 Saturday night on the Lady ’Backs floor after knocking off tournament host Bokoshe 69-40 Friday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse in one semifinal. Panama upset Howe 53-50 in the game after the Arkoma-Bokoshe game.

Coffeyville makes clean sweep of CASC Lady Vikings, Vikings

Despite getting 12 points from Breonna Johnson, it wasn't enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 60-54 loss to the Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College Lady Ravens on Thursday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A 45-24 second half proved to be the difference for the Coffeyville Ravens in their 78-46 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings to complete the sweep for the Kansans.

Leflore teams get road sweep at Hartford

HARTFORD, Ark. — After more than a week off due to weather problems, the Leflore High School basketball teams return to action victorious on Thursday night with a road sweep over Hartford. The Lady Savages beat Hartford 48-20, while the Savages posted a 60-44 victory.

Whitesboro squads post road wins against Battiest

BATTIEST — The Whitesboro High School basketball teams returned to action after more than a week off due to weather issues, but did so with wins Thursday night.
The Bulldogs were too much for the homestanding Battiest Panthers 64-37, while the Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Panthers 45-28.
