There were few upsets on opening day and night of the 2014 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, which took place at four sites on Monday — tournament-host Arkoma, Panama, Pocola and Spiro.
On the boys' side, seven of the top eight seeds were victors. At Arkoma, top-seeded Heavener handled Leflore 49-3 after the Savages beat Bokoshe 34-14 in the play-in game earlier in the day at Panama, while Pocola held off Spiro 31-29.
At Pocola, Talihina's boys were too much for Shady Point in a 53-16 win, which was followed by Monroe's 40-18 victory over Fanshawe and Wister's 42-10 win over Cameron.
ANTLERS — The Talihina High School basketball teams split their road games Monday night against Antlers. The Golden Tigers got their first win of the season, holding off the homestanding Bearcats 51-46. However, a rough second period doomed the Lady Golden Tigers in their 50-38 loss to the Lady Bearcats.
I hope everyone had a happy New Year, but now it's back to business as usual — and you know what that means.
The 2014 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament began Monday, and will wrap up Saturday night with the title games at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The JH LCT Guide was in Saturday's edition, which included the brackets. We'll have daily coverage of this year's event beginning with Wednesday's edition with Monday's action. Next Tuesday's edition will have the final two day's worth of action.
Speaking of the Guide
NEW ORLEANS — As I watched the Alabama Crimson Tide drive right down the field for a touchdown to open the first quarter, I first thought this is a really great team — and I don't think the Oklahoma Sooners can play with them.
However, my second thought was remembering OU facing a USC team for the 2004 national title in the Orange Bowl, and Jason White drove the Sooners right down the field for a 7-0 lead early in that game as well. Of course, we all know what happened in that game.
