CASC softball team goes 3-1 in festival to open 2014 season; Lady Vikings visit Bacone JV this afternoon

The 2014 season got off to a pretty good start for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team this past weekend. The Lady Vikings went 3-1 in their own festival on their own field, beating Southwestern, Tenn., twice — 11-3 and 4-0 — as well as beating Allen County, Kan., 5-4. The lone blemish on the weekend was a 15-11 loss Friday afternoon to Coffeyville, Kan.
The Lady Vikings will return to action this afternoon in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the Bacone College junior varsity in Muskogee.

MULDROW — The Poteau Pirates basketball team rebounded from Thursday night's home loss to Stilwell with a 53-42 road win over the Muldrow Bulldogs on Friday night.
The Pirates jumped out to a 13-5 lead after a period and never lost the lead.
Talihina 50, Pocola 48, OT: Saturday afternoon in Talihina, Alan Lockhart's game-winning basket with two seconds left lifted the Golden Tigers to not only the win but the Black Diamond Conference title.
Spiro 55, Cedarville, Ark., 37: Saturday night in Spiro, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 28-11 lead after a period en route to the homecoming victory.

MULDROW — The Muldrow Lady Bulldogs used a fourth-quarter rally to down the Poteau Lady Pirates 46-39 Friday night.
Trailing 33-29 after three periods, Muldrow outscored Poteau 17-6 in the final period to get the comeback win.
Pocola 45, Talihina 41: Saturday afternoon in Talihina, the Lady Indians won for the second time in as many days, using an 11-1 final period to rally for the come-from-behind victory.
Spiro 74, Cedarville, Ark., 41: Saturday night in Spiro, the Lady Bulldogs celebrated homecoming with a come-from-behind victory.

Playoffs in full swing this week; column moves to Wednesdays

The second season, as the high school basketball playoffs are thought of, will be in full swing in LeFlore County as all the teams will be in postseason play.
Classes 4A, 3A and 2A will begin playoffs at the end of this week, while Class A and B teams will be in their regional tournaments. The complete schedule is at the end of this column.
Heavener at Poteau, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Antlers at Talihina, 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Poteau wrestlers lose dual to McAlester; Talihina duo get victories by pin; Pirate coach honored for 400th coaching win

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team ended its regular season by losing its Senior Night dual 24-18 to the McAlester Buffaloes on Tuesday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The good news is the Pirates won three matches by pin — Sam Shore at 138 pounds, Khy Mote at 182 and Daylon Brewton at heavyweight.
The Talihina Golden Tigers brought two wrestlers, Domnick Shedd and Caleb Blue, to face a couple of Pirates. Both won by pin.

CASC basketball teams split with Seminole State; Lady Vikings, Vikings welcome Murray State to town for Monday night contests

Two Kilah Cummings free throws with 7.4 seconds left in the game, proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 67-64 win over the Seminole State College Lady Belles Thursday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A free throw by the Trojans with 13.9 seconds left in the game was the difference for them in their 79-76 win over the Vikings in the second game of Thursday night's doubleheader.

Stilwell teams sweep Poteau

The Poteau High School basketball teams each had early leads against Stilwell in Thursday night's games at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. However, in the end, both locals fell. The Lady Indians withstood a fourth-quarter rally by the Lady Pirates to win 89-83, while a cold-shooting stint in the second half spelled doom for the Pirates in their 50-33 loss to the Indians.

Panama teams get wins over Wister

PANAMA — The week ended on a high note for the Panama High School basketball teams as they swept home games from the Wister squads Thursday night at the Panama Gym.
The Razorbacks held off the Wildcats to post a 62-57 victory, which came on the heels of the Lady ’Backs' 63-44 win over the Lady ’Cats.

Hodgen girls make state tournament

LeFlore County has its first basketball team to make state. The Hodgen Lady Bulldogs defeated Moffett 49-11 Thursday night at Liberty School to win the Organization of Rural Elementary Schools [ORES] Division II Regional Tournament title and make the state tournament, which will be next weekend in Shawnee.
The Bulldogs stayed alive with a 38-27 win over Krebs to make Saturday afternoon's 2 p.m. regional consolation title game against host Liberty. Saturday's winner also will make state.
