Howe senior quartet plans on enjoying state experience; Lions meet No. 1 OKC Millwood Thursday night at OCU

HOWE — For four senior members of the state-qualifying Howe Lions basketball team, Brent Hill, Nick Smallwood, Stephen Helmandollar and Chesly Hall, they are planning on enjoying this weekend's Class 2A State Tournament experience — which could mean a state semifinal and final contest at Oklahoma City's State Fair Arena, a.k.a., “The Big House.”

Spiro senior girls looking forward to trip to state; Lady Bulldogs meet undefeated Washington Thursday afternoon in state quarterfinals

SPIRO — For two of the three seniors on the Spiro Lady Bulldogs basketball team, Sarika Willis and Philicea Mack, they were freshmen when the Lady Bulldogs made state in 2011 under then first-year coach Kayla Carrington, a.k.a., “Coach K.” They lost in the state quarterfinals. Now that they're seniors, Willis is hoping the state trip three years ago will help pay off this week at the Class 3A State Tournament.

SPIRO — It's been eight years since the Spiro Bulldogs basketball team has made state. The Bulldogs ended the drought Friday night when they won the Class 3A Area Tournament title game over Nowata by a score of 52-44.
When Friday's game ended with the ’Dogs earning a trip to state, it was a good feeling for all.
The Bulldogs won their third straight LeFlore County Tournament in January. While that's a nice feat, winning state may be even better.

Basketball tournament March 29 in Bokoshe

BOKOSHE — There will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament beginning at 10 a.m. March 29 at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.
Cost is $10 per person.
Each team can have up to five players, and must have the minimum of three players.
The tournament is open to individuals ages 13 and older. Teams may be coed.
Brackets will be announced March 24, so the deadline to enter is March 21.
The first-place team will receive t-shirts.

CASC softball team splits with archrival Eastern; Lady Vikings welcome Western, former Lady Pirate to town Thursday afternoon for a twinbill

The Carl Albert State College softball team split its pair of home games with archrival Eastern on Monday afternoon. The Lady Vikings took the nightcap 4-3 after losing the opener 6-3.
After the Lady Vikings played a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Connors State College in Warner, they will return home for a 2 p.m. twinbill Thursday afternoon against Western Oklahoma State College. Making a homecoming of sorts for the Lady Pioneers will be former Poteau Lady Pirate Gabba Wilson.

Poteau Pirates open golf season with runner-up finish at McAlester; four local golfers among top 10 medalists

McALESTER — The Poteau Pirates got their 2014 golf season underway with a runner-up finish in the McAlester Invitational, which took place Monday at the McAlester Country Club.
The Pirates had a 330, two strokes behind champion Tulsa Bishop Kelley (328), which is a Class 5A power.
Four local golfers placed among the top 10, which included individual top medalist Cody Shore of Poteau with a 75.
Poteau's Conner Wheat tied for fourth-place medalist with a 78, while teammate Jarrett Lowrimore was eighth (81).
Cameron's Kody Whitehead was 10th (82).

Heavener boys win powerlifting regional title last weekend; several Wolves, Panana Razorbacks heading to state

HARTSHORNE — The Heavener Wolves powerlifting team won the Class 3A Regional Meet last weekend, and in the process sent several members to Friday's state meet in McLoud.
Two Wolves, Joey Ibarra (198 pounds) and Justin Page (242), were regional champions. Isaiah Rodriguez was regional runner-up at 198 pounds, while Justice Caldwell was fifth at 275 pounds. All four Wolves will represent Heavener at the Class 3A State Meet on Friday.
In the Class 2A Regional Meet here last weekend, three Panama Razorbacks medaled and six total members qualified for Saturday's state meet in McLoud.

GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates suffered their first loss of the season Monday afternoon, losing 9-0 to Greenwood.
The hosts scored four runs in the opening innning to take control of the game.
Heavener 9, Panola 1: In Heavener, the Wolves kept their undefeated season going with a five-inning, run-rule win.
Pocola 14, Gans 0: In Gans, the combination of Johnny Satterfield and Dakota Woffard threw a no-hitter.
Chouteau-Mazie 10, Arkoma 0: In Chouteau, the Mustangs were no-hit in their season opener.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves proved to be too much for the Pocola Lady Indians to handle Monday afternoon as Heavener beat Pocola 20-5.
Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first inning, the Lady Wolves (2-0) scored five in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning for a 12-2 lead.
Whitesboro 3, Wister 2: In Whitesboro, after the Lady Wildcats (0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs (3-0) came back with three runs of their own to get the win.
Editor's note: Nothing was reported on Panama's home game Monday with Keota by press time.
