Lady Pirate golfer captures third Class 4A regional title; Poteau girls regional runners-up, qualify for state

As senior Hannah Ward's Poteau High School golf career is on the back nine, she's making sure she goes out with bang.
Ward, a University of Arkansas-Little Rock signee, won her third Class 4A Regional Tournament, which took place Tuesday at Wolf Ridge Country Club. She shot an 80.
The Lady Pirates were regional runners-up as a team to qualify for next week's Class 4A State Tournament, which will be Wednedsday and Thursday at Lake Hefner South Golf Course.
Poteau's team score was 391, 22 team shots behind regional champion Fort Gibson (369).

Cameron, Heavener golfers make next week's regional tournaments

Two LeFlore County golfers, Cameron's Kody Whitehead and Heavener's Colt Dunigan, punched their tickets to next week's regional tournaments with strong outings in Monday's regional qualifiers.
At the Class 2A Regional Qualifier at Idabel Country Club, Whitehead had the top individual qualifying score with a 73. The two-time state qualifier will play in next Monday's Class 2A Regional Tournament, which will be Pryor Creek Golf Course in Pryor.

CASC baseball team suffers road loss to Connors State; Vikings, who played Tuesday, welcome Western to town this weekend for four-game series

WARNER — The Carl Albert State College baseball team suffered a 12-7 loss to the Connors State College Cowboys on Monday night in a game that was delayed 90 minutes starting due to rain.
The Vikings, who played Tuesday afternoon in Clarksville, Ark., against the University of the Ozarks junior varsity to make up a previous rain out, will entertain Western Oklahoma State College in a two-day, four-game series beginning at 1 p.m. Friday at Ival Goodman Field. There will be a twinbill on Friday, then the final pair of games will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Poteau boys golf team ties for third at Class 4A Preview

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Poteau Pirates golf team tied for third place at Monday's Class 4A State Preview, which took place at Lake Hefner North Golf Course. The Pirates tied Newcastle with a 320. Technically Poteau finished fourth on the tiebreaker of both team's No. 5 golfer's scores. Since Newcastle's No. 5 had a better score than Poteau's, the Racers were officially awarded a third-place team finish, with the Pirates fourth.
Oklahoma City Heritage Hall won the tournament with a 297, with Sallisaw second (313).

Heavener girls go undefeated to win Class 5A district title; Lady Wolves host regional tournament Thursday; Spiro girls' slow-pitch season ends

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team went undefeated on the final day of the Class 5A District Tournament to claim the title on Friday afternoon.
The Lady Wolves, who beat Spiro on Thursday before a hailstorm canceled the rest of the tournament until Friday, won both games from Stigler, 12-1 and 12-4, to win the district title, and advance to this week's Class 5A Regional Tournament — which will be Thursday in Heavener.
The season ended for the Lady Bulldogs as they lost the first game played on Friday, falling 6-3 to the Lady Panthers.

Wister girls beat Howe, Wetumka twice to win Class 3A District Tournament; Season ends for Lady Lions with loss to Lady Chieftains

WISTER — The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team went undefeated on Friday to win the Class 3A District Tournament, beating Howe 19-1 and Wetumka twice by scores of 7-5 and 8-0.
The Lady Lions saw their season end with a 10-5 loss to the Lady Chieftains.

For the third time in five games this season, the Spiro Bulldogs got the better of the Poteau Pirates, and in so doing spoiled Senior Night on Monday at Town Creek Park with an 11-7 come-from-behind victory in a game that featured two small rain delays.
Pocola 13, Sallisaw-Central 0: Monday in Pocola, the Indians got a three-hit performance from the duo of Ricky Manzano and Dakota Woffard. Manzano got the win as he pitched three innings with six strikeouts, while Woffard went the final two innings with a K.

The Poteau Lady Pirates began the week in fine fashion with a 9-1 home victory over the Wister Lady Wildcats on Monday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Lady Wildcats cut the deficit in half in the third inning.
However, Poteau scored in four straight innings, once in the third, three runs in the fourth, twice in the fifth and a run in the sixth to put the game into run-rule status.

Poteau senior softball duo want one more trip to slow-pitch state; Lady Pirates play in regional tournament Wednesday in Muskogee

As freshmen, Poteau Lady Pirate slow-pitch softball seniors Chelsey Campbell and RaeLynn Caldwell made the Class 6A State Tournament, which capped back-to-back trips to state for Poteau.
If the Lady Pirates win Wednesday's Class 6A Regional Tournament in Muskogee, they will make state once again.

Sorry, folks. Due to space constaints in today's edition, I did not have room for the stories about the slow-pitch softball district tournaments that took place or resumed on Friday. Look for them to start appearing in Wednesday's paper. An FYI for you — space constraints may make some of them even hold until Thursday's edition, like what I had to do in the high school basketball playoffs in February and March.
