It will be a battle of Pirates on Thursday morning when Poteau meets regional host Byng at 11 a.m. at Stokes Field. Ada and Broken Bow will play Game 2 at 1 p.m., with the winners meeting at 3 p.m. and the losers playing at 5 p.m.

Wister senior duo excited about state, but sad prep careers ending; Lady Wildcats meet Barnsdall Wednesday afternoon in Class 3A quarterfinals in Shawnee

WISTER — For Wister softball seniors Ashlyn Meeks and Clara Brown, today's Class 3A State Tournament at the Ballfields at Firelake in Shawnee did not look too promising at Thursday's regional tournament in Tushka.
The Lady Wildcats trailed 9-8 with two outs in the seventh inning, but back-to-back RBI singles by Stevee McMillin and Tristan Hagelberger scored Meeks and Ciara Covey, respectively, to win the game 10-9, capture the regional consolation championship and earn a trip to state.

Senior golf girls want second state title in three seasons; Lady Pirates will be in Class 4A State Tournament on Wednesday, Thursday in Oklahoma City

May 6, 2014

The Poteau Lady Pirates golf team could very well be going for a three-peat as Class 4A state champions. They won the state title in 2012 and were a shot behind Hilldale after last year's first day of the Class 4A State Tournament.
However, wintry-like weather conditions forced the cancelation of the second day of the final 18 holes. Thus, the Lady Pirates finished an extremely disappointing shot behind state champion Hilldale.

Heavener soccer boys lose playoff game Friday night to Catoosa; Poteau boys entertain Riverfield tonight in first-round game

May 6, 2014

CATOOSA — The soccer season came to an end for the Heavener Wolves on Friday night, losing to the homestanding Catoosa Indians 5-2.
The Indians, who will play tonight at Verdigris, trailed 2-1 at halftime, but scored four unanswered goals in the second half to get the come-from-behind win.
Miguel Alcantar scored both Heavener goals, and almost recorded a hat trick but his third shot on goal nicked the left goal post and was diverted out of play.
The Poteau Pirates, the defending Class 4A state champions, will entertain Riverfield at 6:30 tonight at Costner Stadium in an opening-round game.
