SHAWNEE — The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team's stay in the Class 3A State Tournament was a short one as they lost 5-0 to the Barnsdall Lady Panthers in the quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at the Ballfields at Firelake. The Lady Panthers broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the first inning, then added three runs in the third and a run in the seventh.
HEAVENER — This weekend won't be Heavener High School senior discus thrower Joseph Walker's first Class 3A State Meet. This weekend's state meet will be his second, but he's entering the best way possible. He was the regional champion in the discus at Saturday's meet in Prague.
There's an old adage that says that people make choices that “ ... are the lesser of two evils.” Talihina High School senior high and long jumper Keisha Brown had to make such a decision.
Brown's choice was to one of two things, either attend graduation ceremonies and miss out on last Saturday's Class 2A Regional Meet in Luther with a shot at making state in either or both event, or miss graduation and jump at the regional meet. Brown did the latter, and made state in both events — being the regional champion in the high jump and the regional runner-up in the long jump.
The 2013 Poteau Pirates baseball season ended on a very disappointing note last spring, falling 10-0 to the Byng Pirates in the winner-take-all Class 4A Regional Tournament title game at Town Creek Park. It made the Poteau baseball team even more ready for the 2014 season, which will continue Friday afternoo in the Class 4A Regional Tournament with a 1 p.m. meeting the same Byng Pirates on their home field, Stokes Field, in Byng. Today's opening-round games were rained out.
The Poteau Lady Pirates track team has had one of its best seasons ever. They have won six meets with two runner-up finishes, including last weekend's Class 4A Regional Meet in Oologah.
If the Lady Pirates can end up with their seventh meet win this season that is this weekend's Class 4A State Meet at Moore's Lions Stadium, it will mean a state championship is coming home — which is exciting the senior state qualifiers, Kaitlan Standridge, Haley Griggs, Deven Bond and Sidnee Ward.
Editor's note: Look for the complete list of LeFlore County state track qualifiers in Friday's edition.
The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team split its final two games of the regular season, beating Fort Gibson 5-4 on Senior Night after losing a road game 9-3 to the Silo Rebels.
