Spiro track seniors want state track title at end of day

SPIRO — For the six Spiro senior track athletes — Philicea Mack, Kanisha Hutchinson, Malik Walker, Trevon Mitchem, Knifeis Carter and Matt Jones — who qualified for this weekend's Class 3A State Meet at Moore's Lions Stadium, winning state would be a great way to cap their prep careers.

Howe senior thrower glad for shot at state championship

Last weekend at the Class 2A Regional Meet in Oologah, Howe senior shot put and discus thrower Savannah Smallwood was not at her best, namely because she was ill. All she did was win the regional title in the shot put and was regional runner-up in the discus to qualify for this weekend's Class 2A State Meet, which began Friday and will end today at Midwest City Carl Albert High School's Titan Stadium.

Poteau soccer seniors want to win final home game tonight; Pirates meet Verdigris at home in state quarterfinals

No matter the outcome of tonight's 7:30 p.m. Class 4A state quarterfinal contest against the Verdigris Cardinals at Costner Stadium, five Poteau Pirate seniors — Kendrick Hardaway, Dylan Fox, Noah Martin, Arturo Medina and Edwin Espinoza — will play their final home game of their careers. Thus, winning tonight is not only important to advance to Tuesday's state semifinal, but also important to end their home careers with a win.

SPIRO — To beat Thursday's rain, the Spiro Bulldogs began their Class 3A Regional Tournament at home Wednesday, and made it to the regional finals and a win from returning to the state tournament for the third straight season. The Bulldogs pounded Valliant 20-0, then downed Stigler 5-1. They will play Eufaula at 4 this afternoon for the regional title. A second title game, if needed, will be at 6 tonight.
