SPIRO — For five innings, Eufaula pitcher Trey Moore kept the Spiro Bulldogs at bay in Saturday afternoon's Class 3A Regional Tournament title game. Then, came the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs erupted for four runs to break a 2-all tie to en route to a 6-3 victory that sent the ’Dogs to their third straight Class 3A State Tournament.
With the game tied at 2 after Eufaula's Brandon Hawkins hit a sacrifice fly to score Casey Pryor with the game-tying run in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs used a one-out rally in the sixth inning to get the win.
MOORE — It was quite a banner day for the Poteau Lady Pirates track team at the Class 4A State Meet at Lions Stadium. The capper was when sophomore Kandace Standridge not only won the state title in the 800-meter run but broke the Poteau High School record in the event by about two seconds. Standridge's winning time was 2:20.61, breaking the school record of 2:22.55 that was set nearly a quarter of a century ago.
MIDWEST CITY — Talihina High School senior Keisha Brown made the decision on May 3 to miss her graduation ceremony to jump at the Class 2A Regional Meet at Luther. She won the regional title in the high jump and was runner-up in the long jump to qualify for this past weekend's state meet at Carl Albert High School's Titan Stadium. The decision was a “gold”-en one for the Lady Golden Tiger.
Brown won the state title in the high jump with a mark of 5-0. She ended up 11th in the long jump (14-10).
MOORE — Several LeFlore County high school track athletes and relay teams placed at the Class 3A State Meet, which took place this past weekend at Lions Stadium.
Heavener's Jodie Hill had two state runner-up finishes in the 100-meter (12.68 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (25.58), while finishing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (18.08).

For Poteau's three senior boy golfers, Connor Wheat, John Scott Sanders and Jarrett Lowrimore, to go out as state champions would be the best way to cap their Poteau High School careers. That can happen by late Tuesday afternoon after playing 54 holes in the Class 4A State Tournament, which will be Monday [36 holes] and Tuesday [18 holes] at Lake Hefner North Golf Course in Oklahoma City.
Making next week's Class 2A State Tournament at Enid's Oakwood Country Club, which will be Monday and Tuesday, was not as hard as it might have seemed to others for Cameron senior Kody Whitehead. He had to go into a playoff for the fourth and final individual berth to state at Monday's Class 2A Regional Tournament at Pryor Creek Golf Course. However, since he was the highest placing individual, he was going to make state anyway, but there were still nerves for the Yellowjacket golfer.
The LeFlore County Bass Club had its sixth tournament of the 2014 circuit Sunday afternoon at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 29 boats filled with anglers who caught a total of 113 fish weighing a collective 271.62 pounds. Each fish averaged 2.4 pounds, and 20 limits were caught.
Josh Walls and Eric Fairless won the tournament with 16.72 pounds to earn them $600. Robbie Brassfield and Keith Jones were second with 16.44 pounds — including Jones' big bass weighing 4.6 pounds — to earn $360. Jones got an additional $240 for his big bass winner.
SPIRO — For the six Spiro senior track athletes — Philicea Mack, Kanisha Hutchinson, Malik Walker, Trevon Mitchem, Knifeis Carter and Matt Jones — who qualified for this weekend's Class 3A State Meet at Moore's Lions Stadium, winning state would be a great way to cap their prep careers.
Last weekend at the Class 2A Regional Meet in Oologah, Howe senior shot put and discus thrower Savannah Smallwood was not at her best, namely because she was ill. All she did was win the regional title in the shot put and was regional runner-up in the discus to qualify for this weekend's Class 2A State Meet, which began Friday and will end today at Midwest City Carl Albert High School's Titan Stadium.
