RINGLING — It took 11 months or so, but the Talihina Golden Tigers avenged its only loss in the 2013 season to spoil a shot at a perfect season.
The Golden Tigers used a strong defensive effort and three Alan Lockhart touchdown runs to beat the Ringling Blue Devils 28-8 in Friday night’s Class A state quarterfinal game at Blue Devil Stadium. The Blue Devils beat the Golden Tigers 26-18 in last season’s Class A state semifinals at Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Paul Laird Field to end Talihina’s shot at a perfect season.

Audu powers CASC men past North Lake, Texas

Emmanuel Audu’s near triple-double of 10 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks was the key for the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their 81-75 win over North Lake, Texas, on Friday afternoon in the Thanksgiving Classic in Plano, Texas.
The Vikings will play South Plains College, Texas, at 4 p.m. Saturday in the second and final day of the Thanksgiving Classic.

CASC women beat Penn Valley

Kilah Cummings double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 79-63 win over host Penn Valley, Mo., on Friday afternoon in the Penn Valley Classic in Kansas City, Mo.
The Lady Vikings will play another Missouri team, Lewis and Clark Community College, at noon Saturday in the second and final game of the Penn Valley Classic.

Talihina senior trio glad for another shot at Ringling; No. 2 Golden Tigers travel to meet No. 8 Blue Devils Friday night in Class A state quarterfinals

In 2013, the Talihina Golden Tigers won their first 13 games en route to a Class A state quarterfinal appearance against the Ringling Blue Devils at Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Paul Laird Field in Durant. The Blue Devils ended the Golden Tigers’ perfect season with a 26-18 victory.
Fast forward to this year. The No. 2 Golden Tigers (11-0) will get another shot at the eighth-ranked Blue Devils (10-1) as the two teams meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ringling’s Blue Devil Stadium.

We’ll see after Friday night if we have December high school football playoffs once more

In 2013, two teams, the Poteau Pirates and the Talihina Golden Tigers, were still playing in the high school playoffs in their respective classes in the month of December. The Pirates played for the Class 4A state title, while the Golden Tigers played in the Class A state semifinals.
This year, one team, Class A’s second-ranked Talihina Golden Tigers, have a shot a punching a return trip to the Class A state semifinals with a road win Friday night over No. 8 Ringling.

McDonald wins Pigskin Picks Contest for fourth time this football season

Russ McDonald won the Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks Contest for the fourth time this season, and the third time outright, as he was last week's winner, being the only contestant to go 9-1. He earned $25 for his victory.

CASC teams suffer road losses Monday afternoon against Redlands; Lady Vikings, Vikings in holiday weekend events Friday, Saturday

The Redlands Community College Lady Cougars held a 50-34 lead at halftime, which proved to be the difference for them in their 94-77 win over the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings on Monday afternoon in El Reno.
Behind 25 points from Ethan Telfair and Redlands going 43-of-55 [78.2 percent] from the free-throw line both proved to be the difference in their 79-64 win over the Vikings in Monday afternoon's second game.

I'm enjoying a week free of basketball ... because hoops will get hot and heavy beginning next week with two straight weeks of tournaments

I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving, and I hope you're enjoying your week break — at least if you work for the public schools of LeFlore County. I know I am as this is a rare hoop-free week for me, not counting the Carl Albert State College teams playing in holiday weekend events.
After this week ends, basketball will indeed get hot and heavy in a big way with back-to-back tournament weeks, and the other six football schools — Poteau, Heavener, Panama, Pocola, Spiro and Talihina — beginning their basketball seasons either next week or the following week.
