Several Poteau wrestlers were honored at Thursday night's banquet at the Dale Cox Community Center.
VAN BUREN, Ark. â€” The Poteau High School soccer teams split their games Thursday against the host Van Buren squads. The Pirates prevailed 4-1, but the Lady Pirates fell 3-1.
The Poteau teams will be in the Fort Smith [Ark.] Invitational, which started Friday and will end today in Greenwood, Ark.
PANAMA â€” The duo of Tristan Thompson and Nikita Bershirs combined on a no-hitter as the Panama Razorbacks blanked the Arkoma Mustangs 15-0 in three innings.
Thompson threw the first two innings with six strikeouts, then Bershirs pitched the third inning with three Ks.
The Hogs scored 14 runs in the first inning to put the game away.
Cameron 5, Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside JV 4: In Fort Smith, Ark., the Yellowjackets got their first win of the season Thursday afternoon as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning, then upped the advantage to 3-0 in the second inning.
SMITHVILLE â€” The Heavener Wolves and the Leflore Savages won their opening-round games in the Smithville Tournament on Thursday. The Wolves beat the host Braves 5-3, while the Savages blanked the Fort Towson Tigers 8-0.
The Wolves and the Savages will meet in this morning's semifinals at 9 a.m.
Wister, the other local team in the field, will play its semifinal contest at 11 this morning.
OKLAHOMA CITY â€” The good news for the Howe Lions in Thursday night's Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinal contest at Oklahoma City University was they went toe to toe with the No. 1 team in the state â€” the Oklahoma City Millwood Falcons â€” for most of the opening half. The bad news was the Falcons ended up flying past the Lions in the second half to a 66-46 victory.
MIDWEST CITY â€” The Spiro Bulldogs basketball team was trying to cap a season that saw the â€™Dogs three-peat as LeFlore County Tournament champions with a state championship. It didn't happen.
The Bulldogs lost 68-59 to the Verdigris Cardinals in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night at Carl Albert High School's Titan Fieldhouse.
BETHANY â€” Three years ago, then new-coach Kayla Carrington took the Spiro Lady Bulldogs to the Class 3A State Tournament, falling in the quarterfinals. They were hoping to get farther this year, but it didn't happen.
The undefeated Washington Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Bulldogs 73-61 in Thursday's state quarterfinals at Southern Nazarene University.
SMITHVILLE â€” The Wister Wildcats baseball team got its first win of the season Thursday morning, routing the Battiest Panthers 15-0 in four innings in the opening round of the Smithville Tournament.
The â€˜Cats broke a scoreless tie with a four-run second inning, highlighted by Ethan Billings' first home run of the season, a three-run shot.
Heavener and Leflore each played opening-round games later in the day. Look for their details in Saturday's edition.
The LeFlore County Bass Club had its third tournament of the 2014 circuit Saturday at Potato Hills South on Sardis Lake. There were 35 boats with 64 anglers who caught 15 fish with a total weight of 62.57 pounds. Each fish caught averaged 4.17 pounds.
The team of Ry and Joe Johnson won with a total of 23 pounds even to earn $775. Of that 23 pounds, 6.36 of that was Ry's big bass winner to earn him an additional $310.
