Spiro edges Stigler to keep playoff hopes alive

STIGLER — The Spiro Bulldogs needed a win Friday night to keep their playoff hopes alive, and they got it.
The ’Dogs went west down Highway 9 and got a 34-32 District 3A-8 road win over the Stigler Panthers.

No. 2 Talihina routs Porter Consolidated

PORTER — Class A's second-ranked team, the Talihina Golden Tigers, can now look ahead to next week's showdown for the District A-6 title against Sallisaw-Central.
The Golden Tigers routed the Porter Consolidated Pirates 64-7 Friday night. The Golden Tigers (8-0 overall, 5-0 in district play) will entertain the Tigers next week, with the winner being the District A-6 champion and the loser the district runner-up. However, both teams will have home playoff games the following week when the Class A playoffs begin.

Vikings drop hoop opener to Howard

Despite making 5-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half and getting 15 points from freshman Derek Mack, it wasn't enough as the Carl Albert State College Vikings dropped their season opener 80-68 to Howard, Texas, in the opening day of the Midwest Scouting Service Challenge on Friday afternoon in Plano, Texas.
The Vikings have two more games in the Challenge this weekend. They met Midland, Texas, at noon today, then will face Ranger, Texas, at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Poteau junior running in state cross country meet this afternoon

At this time last year, Kandace Standridge was prepping for the 2013-14 Poteau High School basketball season. A year later, the Poteau junior will be the lone Lady Pirate or Pirate to run this afternoon in the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet, which will begin at 2 p.m. at Edmond Santa Fe High School.

Wister hoopsters begin seasons tonight at Red Oak, and with new coaches

The Wister High School basketball season for the 2014-15 season will begin tonight as they will travel west to meet the Red Oak Lady Eagles and Eagles at C.C. Gillespie Fieldhouse in Red Oak. The girls game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 8 p.m.
Both teams will see new coaches on the benches this season as former coach Mark Warren is now an assistant coach at Leflore — longtime Wister baseball coach John McAlester will coach the ’Cats, while former Monroe coach Casey Hemphill will coach the Lady ’Cats.

High school basketball season is now upon us

We're just winding down high school football, and lo and behold, here comes high school basketball.
The five LeFlore County schools that don't play football — Wister, Leflore, Cameron, Howe and Whitesboro — will begin their seasons either tonight or next week. The complete list of games through the end of next week is at the end of this column.
Wister at Red Oak, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Leflore at Indianola, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Cameron at Howe, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Moyers at Leflore, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Whitesboro at Smithville, 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Fort Gibson handles Poteau

In a District 4A-4 showdown Friday night, it was the homestanding Fort Gibson Tigers who got the win as they handed the Poteau Pirates a 35-13 loss. In so doing, the Tigers clinched the district title.
In all likelihood, the Pirates will be third, but still make the playoffs.

Dale Jr. vs. Stricklands at Vike@Nite 5k race

The Vike@Nite 5k was Oct. 23, and our whole family ran in it. When we got to the starting line, I hit the music on my phone, and I was planning on flying down the course.
Just around the first mile, I thought I had a good pace going when Creassia Strickland pulled up beside me, running with her son, Jackson, in one of those three-wheeled baby strollers.
