Talihina handles Morrison to reach state quarterfinals; Golden Tigers will get rematch with Ringling next week

November 22, 2014

In pregame warm-ups, one could tell that this game was going to be a battle of quarterbacks, Morrison’s Jordan Quinata and Talihina’s Alan Lockhart. After Quinata had his moments in the opening half, the Talihina defense shut him down.
Meanwhile, Lockhart ran wild all night long as the Golden Tigers advanced to the Class A state quarterfinals with a 62-20 victory over the Wildcats on Friday night at Doc Robinson Stadium.

Sky Zone/Bass Pro Shop Adventure with my sixth-grade Bandit team

November 21, 2014

I took my sixth-grade Bi-State Bandit League football team Saturday to Tulsa for its “end-of-the-year party.” I’ve had some of these kids for four years, and I really wanted to do something special for them.
We left Poteau at 9 a.m. and went to Muldrow, since half of them were playing Stilwell for the Pansy Middle School Raiders in the Muldrow Tournament at 10 a.m. that morning.
After the game, we headed out for Tulsa and got there by 1 p.m. The first stop was Sky Zone indoor trampoline park on 61st Street.

Although season ended sooner than desired, Poteau Pirates had another good season

November 20, 2014

At this time last year, the Poteau Pirates football team was in the midst of a playoff run that would end up at the Class 4A state title game — and ultimately a silver ball as state runners-up.
Although the 2014 season did not get to the same point as last year, the Pirates still made the playoffs and had a winning season — their third in as many seasons under coach Greg Werner.

Arkoma girls begin hoop season Friday night; Lady Mustangs seek return visit to state

November 20, 2014

The Arkoma Lady Mustangs went to the Class A State Tournament last year for the first time since 1992. They’re hoping to return this season.
The Lady Mustangs, who were 25-5 last season, will begin their 2014-15 campaign at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Providence Academy from Rogers, Ark. at the Arkoma Gym.
Editor’s note: No preseason information has been received on the Arkoma Mustangs. Once it has, as well as preseason information on other LeFlore County teams AND their season openers get closer, season preview stories on those teams will be published.

Talihina senior QB, LB propelling Golden Tigers toward gold ball; No. 2 Talihina welcomes No. 10 Morrison on Friday night for berth in state quarterfinals

November 20, 2014

Last season, the Talihina Golden Tigers football team got to the Class A state semifinals before losing its only game of 2013 to Ringling to miss out by a win of playing for the gold ball.
This year, Talihina senior quarterback Alan Lockhart and senior linebacker Logan Hillebrand are doing their part to help the Golden Tigers make another deep playoff run this season.

Morrison Wildcats a force to be reckoned with for Talihina Golden Tigers

November 20, 2014

Even though the Morrison Wildcats defeated Okeene by the score of 36-7 in their Class A opening-round playoff game last week, they seemed to have lost favor with the pollsters as they dropped out of the Top 10 in Oklahoma Class A. The Oklahoma State Associated Press Class A Poll had the ’Cats 10th, but once the regular season ends, the weekly poll does as well.

Tuesday’s High School Girls Basketball Roundup

November 19, 2014

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs took advantage of the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets only having five players as the hosts proved to be too much on this night, posting a 56-24 win Tuesday night at Steve Linker Gymnasium.
A free throw by Cameron’s Destiny Dunigan cut her team’s deficit to 9-8 with 30 seconds left in the opening period.
However, from there, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady ’Jackets 23-7 to end the first half as Whitesboro took a 32-15 halftime lead.
