It was bound to happen sooner or later â€” Mother Nature was going to win out one at least one basketball night this season.
Due to late Sunday/early Monday morning wintry precipitation, all of tonightâ€™s basketball games were canceled.
The Carl Albert State College road games against Murray State will take place at 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday at MSCâ€™s Beames Fieldhouse in Tishomingo.
Tonightâ€™s Wilburton-Panama games were rescheduled for 6 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Panama Gym.
ARKOMA â€” The Arkoma Lady Mustangs and the Cameron Yellowjackets captured Class A District Tournament titles Saturday night at the Arkoma Gym. The Lady Mustangs beat the Keota Lady Lions 68-49, while the â€™Jackets got past the homestanding Mustangs 64-45. All four teams advance to this week's Class A Regional Tournament at Antlers on Thursday and Kiowa on Friday and Saturday.
In Friday night's elimination game, the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets and the Keota Lions saw their seasons end. The Lady â€™Jackets fell 40-23 to Keota, while the Lions suffered a 55-50 loss to Arkoma.
Alan Callahan is the lucky individual who won the first-ever grand prize package for the Poteau Daily Newsâ€™ Pigskin Picks Contest, which was awarded this year for the first time.
Callahan was selected based upon having the most wins during the season, seven. That was two more than Robert Swinford, who had five.
Callahanâ€™s grand prize was a $50 check and a gift certificate at Genoâ€™s Pizza.
The Poteau Daily News will return with an even bigger Pigskin Picks Contest package for the 2015 season, which will begin in late August/early September. Look for details as the season gets closer.
The Wister High School basketball teams celebrated Senior Night with a pair of wins over Panama on Thursday night at the Wister Gym.
The Wildcats capped the evening with a 90-60 rout of the Razorbacks, while the Lady â€˜Cats began the night with a 55-46 victory over the Lady Razorbacks.
FORT SMITH, Ark. â€” The regular season ended on an extremely high note for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team, which won both duals in Thursday nightâ€™s triangular.
Poteau beat the host team, Fort Smith Northside, 48-29 and Fort Smith Southside 48-30.
The Pirates will begin the postseason next weekend at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Coweta. The top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament the following weekend.
The Hodgen Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs tried Friday night to earn trips to next weekâ€™s Organization of Rural Elementary Schools [ORES] Division II State Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs faced Krebs, followed by the â€™Dogs meeting Idabel Denison at McAlester Frink-Chambers Middle School in regional championship games.
Three other ORES teams, the Shady Point Lady Warriors, the Fanshawe Lady Grizzlies and the Monroe Eagles, will have a chance to make state by winning consolation championships.
