HEAVENER — Last year, the Heavener Wolves soccer team was a very young but quick and talented team. The Wolves again should be considered on of the elite teams in the district, and the showdown between the Wolves and Poteau Pirates later in the year could be for the entire ball of wax.

WILBURTON — Eastern Oklahoma State College’s Men's Basketball Coach Scott Edgar has been named the NJCAA Region II Coach of the Year.
“It’s an honor any time you’re named Coach of the Year by your peers,” Edgar said. “It could not be accomplished without a tremendous team and that includes our players, our administration and our community.”
Three players for the eighth-ranked Mountaineers also received honors, which are voted on by the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches.

After a big victory Monday afternoon at Roland, the Poteau Pirates baseball team was hoping to keep the winning ways going in Tuesday afternoon's home opener at Town Creek Park. It was not to be.
The Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside Grizzlies scored in all five innings and ended up run ruling the Pirates 17-5.
HEAVENER — After getting strong pitching in their season-opening win on Monday from the combination of Parker Johnson and Grant Severe, along came Connor Mangham for the Pocola Indians.
Mangham thew a no-hitter, and missed out on a perfect game by a batter, as the Indians blanked the Heavener Wolves 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.
Mangham struck out 17 batters, and only allowed one batter to reach by a base on balls. That baserunner was later caught stealing on a strikeout-throwout double play, so that the Indian starter only faced the minimum 21 batters for the game.
SALLISAW — The Poteau Lady Pirates made it 2-for-2 to start the season as they run ruled the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds 17-5 Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates scored twice in the first inning and six runs in the second inning for an 8-0 lead. Most of the Poteau runs were unearned due to Sallisaw miscues.
Shelby Standridge scored four runs, Natalee King and Meagan Ryburn three runs apiece and two runs scored each by Kylie Brown, Brenna Vise and Montana Roll. Sidnee Ward scored the other run.
