Strong second half propels Spiro past Checotah on Senior Night, facing Hilldale Hornets in playoffs next week

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs came back from a 10-0 first-quarter deficit Friday night at McClain Stadium, pulling away from the Checotah Wildcats for a 26-18 come-from-behind win.
The Bulldogs (6-4 overall, 5-2 in District 3A-8) ended up in third place in the district, and will travel to meet the Hilldale Hornets at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in Muskogee.

Heavener outlasts Eufaula in football season finale Friday night

EUFAULA — The Heavener Wolves football team wanted to have its second five-win season in a row. The Wolves got it, but it didn't come easy as they outlasted the Eufaula Ironheads 49-42 in Friday night's season finale.

Poteau Pirates end football season with rout of Tulsa Rogers on Senior Night

Going into the final game, the Poteau Pirate coaches knew that the Tulsa Rogers Ropers were a team of freshmen and sophomores only, and Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach, made it quit clear in the pre-game speech that he want the seniors to have a fun night. It was obvious from the very beginning that he was going to call the plays that would put the seniors in favorable positions to score in the 2012 regular-season finale Friday night at Costner Stadium.

WISTER — The Wister Wildcats got things going in the right direction to get the 2012-13 season going as they defeated the Leflore Savages 59-48 Friday night at the Wister Gym.
Howe 64, Smithville 49: Friday night in Howe, the Lions, who lead 19-13 after a period, outscored the Braves 14-6 in the second quarter to take a 33-19 lead at halftime.

WISTER — The 2012-13 season got off to a good start for the Wister Lady Wildcats as they handled the Leflore Lady Savages 48-14 Friday night at the Wister Gym.
Howe 58, Smithville 27: Friday night at Howe, the Lady Lions jumped out to an 11-4 lead, but had the deficit cut to 23-18 at halftime.
However, Howe outscored Smithville 18-7 in the third quarter to take a 41-25 lead into the final period.
Whitesboro 46, Battiest 12: Thursday night at Battiest, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one period and never looked back.

Now, it's off to the playoffs

The 2012 regular season of high school football has ended, and for four LeFlore County teams — Spiro (Class 3A), Panama (Class 2A), Pocola (Class 2A) and Talihina (Class A) — they will now begin their postseason parade next week.
I'm planning on some special feature stories on some of these teams' players throughout the latter half of next week for something different and special from what I've been doing with these teams.

CASC basketball teams sweep homecoming games Thursday night

It was a happy homecoming for the Carl Albert State College basketball teams as they opened their seasons Thursday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Behind Adrion Webber's 22 points and LaShawn Gallion's 20 points, the Vikings got a 92-78 come-from-behind victory over the North Arkansas Pioneers.
The came on the heels of the Lady Vikings' 102-27 rout of the St. Gregory's University junior varsity, thanks to 14 points off of the bench by former Heavener Lady Wolf Skylar Cooper.

Thunder wins home opener over Blazers on Friday night after losing season opener Thursday in San Antonio

OKLAHOMA CITY — After a stunning defeat Thursday night at San Antonio thanks to Tony Parker's shot at the buzzer, the Oklahoma City Thunder returned home for its home opener Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland knocked off the Los Angeles Lakers in its home opener Wednesday night.
It was a tough loss to the Spurs as the Thunder held the ball and a three-point lead with just less than a minute to play. However, the trip back home was a chance for the team to get their first win of the season — and that the Thunder did.
