Poteau gets several track individuals, relays to state

TAHLEQUAH — There will be a good representation of Poteau Lady Pirates and Pirates at this weekend's Class 5A State Meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Yukon High School's Miller Stadium.
Two Lady Pirate relays were regional runners-up at the Class 5A Regional Meet, which took place Saturday — and was finished on Monday due to weather.
Colleen Peterson, Brittany Fox, Kandace Standridge and Latifah Harris were second in the 1,600-meter relay (4:13.29), while Peterson, Deven Bond, Haley Griggs and Standridge were runners-up in the 3,200-meter relay (10:15.12).

Ex-Sooner, Spiro Bulldog Shoate elected to college football hall

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Former University of Oklahoma linebacker Rod Shoate has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame.
The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame announced Tuesday the selection of 12 former players and two former coaches to the hall.
Shoate, a former Spiro Bulldog, was a two-time All-American at OU during the 1970s.
The Sooners went 10-0-1 and 11-0 during his final two seasons and he becomes the 20th former Sooner elected to the college hall.

Poteau golfer fourth at state; Pirates finish in sixth place as a team

OKLAHOMA CITY — Poteau golfer Cody Shore was fourth-place medalist at this year’s Class 4A State Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Lake Hefner North Golf Course. He shot a 67-71-71—209. His finish was Poteau’s best since Zac Poole, who played collegiately at East Central University in Ada, was state runner-up in 2004.

Poteau tennis player qualifies for state

TULSA — Thanks to one Poteau High School sophomore, there’s now six sports going on this spring.
Poteau sophomore tennis player Skylar Abbott qualified for the Class 4A State Tournament, which will be Friday and Saturday at the Will Rogers Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.
Abbott placed fourth in the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Monday at the Health and Grand Racquet Club.
Abbott opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win to Nowata, and then lost to the top-seeded player, Riverfield’s Zeke Clark, in the regional quarterfinals.
In the consolation semifinals, Abbott defeated Henryetta 6-0, 6-1.

Cameron golfer places in top 15 at Class 2A State Tournament

BROKEN ARROW — Cameron golfer Kody Whitehead placed 11th in this year’s Class 2A State Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Emerald Falls Golf Course.
Whitehead, a junior, shot a 77-80—157 on the first day, but closed out strong by shooting his best score of the three rounds — a 75 on Tuesday — to put him at 232 for the 36-hole tournament.
Whitehead will play in the Hudiburg Open, which will be May 26-27 in Midwest City.

Heavener freshman wins three medals at Class 3A State Meet

ARDMORE — It was quite a weekend for Heavener Lady Wolf runner Jodie Hill at the Class 3A State Meet, which took place at Ardmore High School's Noble Stadium.
Hill was third in both the 100-meter dash (12.57 seconds) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.08), while placing fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.92) to win three medals.
In her final state meet, Heavener's Laura Jo Allen placed sixth in the discus (107-0) to earn a medal.

Howe Lady Lion thrower earns two state track meet medals

MIDWEST CITY — Howe Lady Lion shot putter and discus throw Savannah Smallwood earned two medals at the Class 2A State Meet, which took place Friday and Saturday at Carl Albert High School's Titan Stadium.
Smallwood was state runner-up in the shot put (35-8.5) and sixth in the discus (103-6). She missed out on a state title in the shot put by two inches as Hennessey's Shelby Crump took state in the event (35-10.5).

CASC softball team sees spring season end Friday at Region II Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY — The college softball season came to an end for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings on Friday at the Region II Tournament at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Lady Vikings lost 7-3 to Western Oklahoma State College and 3-2 to Eastern Oklahoma State College to see their season end at 12-29.

Matos: ‘Everyone should be out here’ for tonight’s state semifinals

When the Poteau Pirates soccer team beat the Oologah Mustangs 6-2 in Friday night’s Class 4A state quarterfinals, it meant not only return to the state semifinals, but their state semifinal contest will take place at 7 tonight at Costner Stadium against the Bethany Bronchos.

OOLOGAH — The past two trips the Poteau Pirates soccer team made to Oologah, both resulted in victories — but both wins came by a single goal, and both victories came late in the second half.
In Friday night’s Class 4A state quarterfinal game, the Pirates came out with focus and resolve and bridled the Mustangs.
The Pirates scored eight minutes into the game and never pulled back on the reins as they won by the score of 6-2. to put the top-ranked Pirates (14-1) into the state semifinals against the Bethany Bronchos at 7 tonight at Costner Stadium.
