The home portion of the 2013 fast-pitch softball season began in a fine way for the Poteau Lady Pirates on Monday afternoon with a 9-1, six-inning, run-rule victory over the Westville Lady Yellowjackets.
Senior pitcher RaeLynn Caldwell was in complete control of Westville's hitters, striking out 14 batters.
PANAMA â€” Panama pitcher Hannah Goines threw a no-hitter as the Lady Razorbacks blanked the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 8-0 in Panama's home opener Monday afternoon.
Goines struck out four batters and did not allow a hit.
Howe 7, Arkoma 0: In Arkoma, the Lady Lions spoiled the home opener for the Lady Mustangs.
Howe freshman pitcher Morgan Hillebrand threw a five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
Heavener 8, Cameron 2: In Cameron, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the third inning as Heavener scored once in each of the first two innings, then added four runs in the third inning.
The Leflore Savages baseball team beat Soper 2-1, but lost to the two host teams â€” 8-0 to Coleman and 1-0 to Calera â€” in the two-day Coleman-Calera Baseball Festival over the weekend.
Leflore's Monday afternoon road game at Buffalo Valley was canceled due to a funeral. The game has not been reschduled.
Forgive me if you don't see me a lot over the next two weeks. This week, I'm busy putting out the 2013 Fall Diamond Tab, which will be in Saturday's edition.
Next week, I'll be working on the 2013 LeFlore County Gridiron Preview, which will come out Aug. 31.

RED OAK â€” Two LeFlore County high school baseball teams brought home plaques Saturday from the Red Oak Eagle Classic.
The Cameron Yellowjackets held off the Crowder Demons 7-6 to win the third-place game after losing Friday afternoon's semifinal 11-3 to the Stuart Hornets.
The Wister Wildcats claimed the consolation championship with a 9-1 win over the Howe Lions.
HEAVENER â€” The Heavener Lady Wolves got their 2013 fast-pitch softball season off and running with a pair of home wins Friday afternoon, beating Sallisaw 5-2 and Battiest 11-2.
Eagletown 12, Whitesboro 11: In Eagletown, the Lady Eagles were able to outlast the Lady Bulldogs.
The Poteau Pirates had their red-white interteam scrimmage Saturday night at Costner Stadium as they split their 63 players as equally as possible.
The Pirates started practice last week, put on pads Friday for the first time, and then staged a full-contact scrimmage on Saturday night, a scrimmage that was going to be used as a starting point for evaluating players.
BROKEN ARROW â€” The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team went 2-3 to open the season this past weekend at the Broken Arrow Tournament.
Poteau beat Sapulpa 9-6 and Oologah 2-1, but lost 7-5 to Broken Arrow, 7-6 to Oklahoma City Putnam City North and 9-0 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah.
POCOLA â€” The Pocola Lady Indians softball team won its own tournament, but had to do it the hard way Saturday night.
The Lady Indians, who lost the winner's-bracket final 5-0 to the Wister Lady Wildcats earlier in the day, beat the Lady â€™Cats twice by scores of 6-1 and 5-2 to win the inaugural Pocola Invitational.
The Lady Indians rebounded from the loss to Wister by outlasting the Stigler Lady Panthers 2-1 in a nine-inning game which went to the international tie-breaker to get to the championship round.
Stigler eliminated Cameron 6-0 to get the day started on Saturday.
