Senior wide receiver can't wait for Friday night

September 4, 2013

Although the Poteau Pirates football team won its final game of the 2012 season, the win did not come in the playoffs. It came in the season finale over Tulsa Rogers in Week 10 at Costner Stadium.
Thus, the Pirates have had Sept. 6, 2013, etched in their minds ever since — the date of this year's season opener against the Durant Lions at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Costner Stadium. Senior wide receiver Jarrett Lowrimore is no exception.
“We've been anticipating this night ever since we got in here in the spring and on through practice,” he said. “We can't wait. We're super excited.”

Pocola girls defeat Cameron, Hartshorne; Lady Yellowjackets down Lady Miners

September 4, 2013

POCOLA — What was originally slated to be just a single game between Highway 112 rivals Cameron and Pocola turned into a three-way with Hartshorne in the mix on Tuesday.
The good news was that all three games played were won by LeFlore County teams. For the host Lady Indians, the news even better as they won both their games, run-ruling both the Lady Yellowjackets and the Lady Miners by identical 8-0 scores.
The middle game was won by Cameron, which beat Hartshorne 6-4.

Panama football team gets extra home game; Razorbacks will welcome Gore Pirates to town Thursday night instead of hitting the road

September 4, 2013

This week is already off to a good start for the Panama Razorbacks football team, and the Hogs haven't opened their 2013 season.
The Razorbacks were supposed to open the season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the road against the Gore Pirates. However, since Gore's field is not ready, the game will take place at George Ollie Stadium.
“It's a big plus for us,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “It's good for our fans, our boosters, concessions and gates. It's big to have six home games this year.”
The players were really enthusiastic about the news.

Arkoma Mustangs open season Friday night at home against Keota Lions

September 4, 2013

Arkoma football coach Mark Weatherton could not more pleased with the shape of his team as his Mustangs begin the 2013 season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mustang Field against the Keota Lions.
“I think we're where we want to be,” he said. “I think offensively we played better Friday night [against Gans and Watts]. Defensively, we're still solid. We had a few mistakes here and there, but it's nothing that we can't correct in practice. Our scrimmage really went well. We're ready to go at it on Friday night.”

Knight Time, Baby Elephants, Boomer Sooners for my boys

September 4, 2013

Before I get started, the want to answer that trivia question I gave you all an extra week to ponder. The question was who is the only person to win a championship in two different sports? Gene Connelly won a championship in the National Basketball Association and with the Milwaukee Braves (who are, of course, now in Atlanta).

Poteau running trio place in top 10 at Tulsa University Hurricane Festival

September 3, 2013

TULSA — Three Poteau Lady Pirates cross country runners medaled in the high school senior girls division of Saturday's Tulsa University Hurricane Festival.
Deven Bond was fourth (6:22), Haley Griggs seventh (6:29) and Kaitlan Standridge ninth (6:39) as they finished in the top 10.
Brittany Fox was 27th (7:45) and Haley Clark was 32nd (8:27) as the Lady Pirates were third in the team standings with 48 points to finish behind champion Jenks (37 points) and Broken Arrow (43).

I made it through, folks!

September 3, 2013

Well, I got through these past two to two-and-a-half weeks of perhaps the most strenuous work I've done in my nearly quarter of a century of being a sports writer.
