HEAVENER — Just a couple of big plays by the visiting Hartshorne Miners spoiled the home opener for the Heavener Wolves, who lost 28-21 Friday night at Harvey Stadium.
ROLAND — In last week's season opener, the Panama Razorbacks had a lead for the first half of their home opener against the Gore Pirates before losing 35-19.
This week was a totally different game as the Hogs suffered a 44-0 loss to the homestanding Roland Rangers Friday night. No more information was available.
BROKEN BOW — Last week, the Poteau Pirates freshmen football team grounded out and rushed for more than 300 yards against the McAlester Buffaloes. But their game had a lot of holes and gaps in it. Thursday night at Memorial Stadium, the Pirates worked hard to improve their passing play and their fullback play. Even though the Pirates did not have a rusher to crack the 100-yard plateau, their offensive effort was greatly improved as their passing game and fullback play improved by leaps and bounds.
McALESTER — The Pansy Kidd Middle School seventh-grade football team kept their record unblemished as the Raiders played to a 28-28 tie with the McAlester Buffaloes on a hot Thursday at Hook Eales Stadium. When action began, the temperature was hotter than 100 degrees.
However, the eighth-grade Raiders suffered a 46-21 loss to the Buffaloes.
First of all, let me say I'm sorry about the lateness of the Week 1 Gridiron Notes Column. My goal is to get it in either Wednesday's or Thursday's or Friday's edition. However, it will always run by no later than the Saturday edition after the previous week's game — like this is today.
I believe that it's more important to wait to make sure I have all the information I need for it and run it in a Saturday edition than to rush putting it in an earlier edition and leave someone out who is deserving of being part of the individual lists, which you will see below.
NORMAN — It's been a banner two days for the Poteau Lady Pirates in the University of Oklahoma Invitational. The Lady Pirates have won all four of their pool-play games, which took place Thursday and Friday.
The Lady Pirates defeated Edmond Santa Fe 4-1, then beat Class 4A's fifth-ranked Purcell 8-1 on Friday.
On Thursday, Poteau posted wins over Hilldale (5-3 in eight innings) and Lawton MacArthur (7-3).
CLAREMORE — The Panama Lady Razorbacks softball team split its four games in Thursday's Coweta-Claremore Invitational.
The Lady ’Backs beat Tulsa Washington (5-1) and Vinita (12-6 in international tiebreaker in eight innings), but lost to Tahlequah (5-0) and Claremore (3-2).
ARKOMA — Due to the rainstorm which moved into LeFlore County on Friday, the Wister-Arkoma Green Valley Conference doubleheader was rained out.
The Lady Wildcats had a 4-1 lead when the Lady Mustangs were coming to bat in the bottom of the second inning when the rainstorm stopped the game. Since the game had not gone the necessary innings to be a complete game, it was considered a rainout. No make-up date has been set for the conference twinbill.
Whitesboro 6, Smithville 0: Friday in Whitesboro, the Lady Bulldogs (4-9) won back-to-back games in as many days.
The Wister Junior High School Lady Wildcats are a win away from winning the 2012 LeFlore County Junior High Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which is taking place at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The Lady Wildcats are the only undefeated team in the tournament and will be in the title game at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon at the PARC. Wister posted wins over Howe, Panama and Spiro.
