Poteau Youth Wrestling Club has members place at USJOC, Oologah weekend tournaments; local wrestler receives Academic All-State, Governor’s Awards at OKC event

The Poteau Youth Wrestling Club had 10 members participate in the USJOC Tournament last weekend in Oklahoma City.
Three of those 10 wrestlers placed as Ethan Carey was runner-up and James Moss was fifth in the novice portion of the tournament, while Jarrett Lilley was sixth in the open division.
Other wrestlers who competed but did not place were Talan Fairless, Drew Moro, Remington Reed, Hayden Moro, Luke Brooks, Race Williams, Mason Francis and Jarrod Vineyard.
Brooks, while he did not medal, did receive the Academic All-State and Governor’s Awards.

Wickware, Warner win 2013 He-Man Tournament

The third annual He-Man Women Haters Club’s Polar Bear Tournament took place Saturday at Grasshopper Landing on Broken Bow Lake.
Jason Wickware and Chad Warner claimed the top prize with 18.48 pounds of fish to earn $180.
An Idabel duo came in second — Brandon Scarborough and Brian Robinette — with a stringer weighing 16.52 pounds.
Mike Scarborough and John Jobe were third (12.71 pounds), followed by Mike Sockey, Ed Sockey, Jeff Roberts and yours truly in fourth (11.72) and Andy Nance and Judd Wann were fifth (11.23).

Hoops, wildlife rule changes on the forefront this week

This is LeFlore County Junior High Tournament week, and the Wister boys and girls are having a good week so far. Both teams are in the semifinals Friday night and both will be playing Spiro. If you get a chance come on out and watch these kids play.

HOWE — The Howe Lady Lions bounced back from Friday night’s first-ever loss at their current home with a 48-34 victory over the Bokoshe Lady Tigers on Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions doubled the Lady Tigers in the opening period, 12-6, and stretched their lead to 21-10 at halftime and 32-16 by the end of three periods.
Arkoma 60, Cameron 34: In Cameron, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to 14-0 lead after one period and never looked back.
Panama 58, Wister 49: In Wister, the Lady Razorbacks jumped out to a 17-2 lead after one period and kept the Lady Wildcats at bay.

CAMERON — The Cameron Yellowjackets got a comeback Green Valley Conference home win Tuesday night as they defeated the Arkoma Mustangs 64-52.
The Yellowjackets trailed 15-11 after one period, but then outscored the Mustangs 53-37 over the final three quarters to get the come-from-behind victory.
Howe 68, Bokoshe 17: In Howe, the Lions put the game away early by outscoring the Tigers 31-3 in the first quarter.
All 15 players scored for the Lions.

Wister girls get victory over last year's champion PKMS team

There will be a new girls county championship team as the Wister Lady Wildcats knocked off last year's champions, the Poteau/Pansy Kidd Middle School Lady Raiders 21-18 Tuesday afternoon in the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Basketball Tournament at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The 2013 tournament's top-seeded girls team, the Howe Lady Lions, advanced with a 25-14 victory over Talihina, while the fifth-seeded Monroe Lady Eagles upset fourth-seeded Heavener 30-28.

Spiro girls pull off second straight upset in as many days, knock off No. 2 Hodgen

MONROE — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs, who are seeded 10th in the 2013 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, are quickly becoming the Cinderellas this season's annual event.
For the second straight day, the Lady Bulldogs pulled off an upset. After knocking off No. 7 Bokoshe on Monday afternoon at the Monroe gym, they returned to the same site and did likewise in posting a 33-29 victory over second-seeded Hodgen in the championship quarterfinals.
The three other games here were boys quarterfinals, and the two top-seeded teams posted wins.

Poteau wrestlers pin losses on Talihina, FS Southside

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team resumed dual action Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse as they handled both the Talihina Golden Tigers (60-12) and Fort Smith (Ark.) Southside (57-24).
Southside won the middle dual, 42-18 over Talihina.
The Pirates will return to action with a road dual against Tahlequah beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Poteau’s Tyler Tustin was third at 138 pounds in this past weekend’s Cushing Tournament.

Eastern Oklahoma State College basketball teams sweep CASC

Despite getting 21 points from Adrion Webber, it wasn’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their 83-73 loss to the Eastern Oklahoma State College Mountaineers in the second game of Monday night’s action at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Despite getting 18 points from former Heavener Lady Wolf Skylar Cooper, the Lady Vikings fell 91-73 to the Lady Mountaineers.
The CASC teams will return to action Thursday night at home as they will entertain Redlands Community College at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. The women’s contest will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 8 p.m.
