McALESTER — The Christmas Break did not begin on a high note for the Poteau High School basketball teams Saturday at Brumley Gym.
The Lady Pirates fought valiantly, but fell short in a 57-49 loss to the McAlester Lady Buffaloes.
The Buffaloes made it a sweep for the locals as they defeated the Pirates 50-40.
ROGERS, Ark. — The Poteau Youth Wrestling Club had several participants and several placers at last weekend's Rumble in Rogers.
Wyatt Snapp took home first place, while Bryce Edwards was runner-up.
Several athletes came in third place in the tournament — Jarrett Lilley, Ross Johnson, Jarrod Vineyard, Remington Reed, Gavin Morgan, Charles Graham, Kadin Repass and Drexton Brown.
Dakota James and Dax Collins were fourth.
Parker Killion, Race Williams, Caden Warren, Ethan Carey, Dalton Edwards, Drayden Brown and Bryson Terry also competed, but did not medal.
Coach Jim Henderson was a man who loved football, and all kinds of sporting events. He knew that I love trivia, and he was always asking me some form of trivia. One question he asked me was, “What was the name of General Ulysses S. Grant's horse?” Everyone said, Cincinnati.
Henderson was an expert on boxing trivia, also. But the area in which he thrived was football trivia.
He asked me the question I had in my column last week — Can you name the state that has at least three colleges which have won national championships besides Florida?
In Saturday's edition, Mark Goines' "Hooked on Fishin'" Column had the wrong times for his show on his new network listed.
The correct times will be 5:30 a.m. Saturdays and 6:30 a.m. Sundays on KFSM Channel 5.

As a team, the Pirates were seventh.
Besides Tustin, five other Pirates placed in the two-day event. Devin Anderson was third at 113 pounds, Tanner Sanders (145 pounds) and Derek Francis (170) were fourth, Kyle Kingery was fifth at 160 pounds and Chevy Galetka was sixth at 182 pounds.
WILBURTON — Some hardware came home to Howe Saturday night.
The Howe Lady Lions handled the Hartshorne Lady Miners 51-30 to win the Wilburton Tournament Saturday night at the new Wilburton Gym after they got past the Wright City Lady Lumberjax 44-38 in Friday afternoon's championship semifinals.
The Lions also won a trophy as they defeated the host Wilburton Diggers 50-38 to win the third-place game to bounce back from Friday's 62-34 semifinal loss to the Okemah Panthers.
POCOLA — I guess it was only appropriate that fans of both the Heavener and Pocola high school basketball programs were left with something to cheer about to end the 2011 portion of their seasons.
The Lady Wolves rallied from a 12-point deficit to down the Lady Indians 54-52, but the Indians gained a split for Pocola in the doubleheader as they tamed the Wolves 66-40.
ARKOMA — The Arkoma Lady Mustangs entered Christmas Break in fine fashion as they routed the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 66-42 Friday night at the Arkoma Gym.
The Arkoma Lady Mustangs junior high team also won, beating McCurtain 32-20.
Roland 63, Spiro 58: In Spiro, the Lady Rangers (5-1) jumped out to a 21-13 lead after one period, but the Lady Bulldogs (3-2) outscored them 32-25 over the next two quarters to cut the deficit to 46-45 going into the final period.
ARKOMA — The McCurtain Bulldogs spoiled the Arkoma Mustangs' hopes to win their second straight game to enter the Christmas Break as the ’Dogs prevailed 53-40 Friday night at the Arkoma Gym.
