August 23, 2013

The Arkoma Mustangs will get a taste of Friday night-like game conditions when they entertain the Porum Panthers for a 6 p.m. scrimmage tonight at Mustang Field.
For the Mustangs, the game plan is clear for tonight's scrimmage.
“For us, it's all about effort and being able to line up in the formations the right way,” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “We don't want to have any penalties. We're not going to do anything fancy. We want to see our kids block and tackle, and go hit somebody. We're pretty excited about going to hit somebody else and get a taste of [Friday night].”

The Panama Razorbacks had their red-white interteam scrimmage on Saturday at George Ollie Stadium.
However, now they will get the chance to go against somebody else than themselves as the Hogs will welcome the Savanna Bulldogs to town for a 6 p.m. scrimmage tonight at George Ollie Stadium.
“We finally get to beat around on somebody else,” third-year Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “Pushing around our own guys gets old and boring. The kids are excited about it [tonight's scrimmage].”

Half a Mantle autograph

August 22, 2013

Memorabilia wise, I have something that is very rare, and it could be a one-and-only kind of autograph in the entire civilized world. It could be right up there as the rarest piece of memorabilia in sports collecting folklore.
When we made our normal pilgrimmage to Kansas City in the early 1960s, we would always ride the KCS railroad there.

Fly fishing in the Lower Illinois River is in our future

August 22, 2013

My son has started a fly-fishing frenzy at my house. Cash finally got his fly rod a couple of weeks ago, and Koby and I have both used it at the pond by our house. We have some friends from Greers Ferry, Ark., that gave a fly rod to Koby, and I have to pick it up in a couple of weeks. Koby is excited about getting his own now because he caught a 1½-pound bass on Cash’s last week. I guess I will have to get one also and head to Broken Bow or Tenkiller to try and catch some trout.

Late home run dooms Poteau girls in upset bid over No. 1 Tahlequah

August 22, 2013

An adage goes, “Close only counts in horseshoes.” However, close is the exact word to use in describing Tuesday's Poteau Lady Pirates home game against Class 5A's top-ranked Tahlequah Lady Tigers.
The Lady Pirates were one out away from not only back-to-back home wins, but knocking off the No. 1 team in Class 5A. Then, the blast.
Tahlequah's Kirsten Chase hit the first pitch she saw from Poteau's RaeLynn Caldwell in the seventh inning over the left-field fence for a two-run home run which ended up being the game winning hit in a 2-1 victory.

Spiro football team to have first scrimmage of season tonight; Bulldogs welcome Okmulgee, Tulsa Webster to town

August 22, 2013

The Spiro Bulldogs football team will get a taste of game-night situations when they have a three-way home scrimmage against Okmulgee and Tulsa Webster at 6 tonight at McClain Stadium.
The biggest thing veteran Spiro coach Chris Bunch is looking for is finding No. 2s to spell his No. 1s.
“We're mainly trying to find some depth,” he said. “We don't have many kids out there to begin with, and we're going to have to find some players who can give our starters some rest.”
