Heat always an issue as football practice starts

August 10, 2013

The good news is that football season is upon us as high school football teams will begin practice next week. The bad news, as is just about always the case, is that it will likely be hot — which is a major concern for football coaches everywhere. LeFlore County is no different.

Next week cannot get here fast enough for football players, coaches

August 10, 2013

Ever since the 2012 football seasons ended for LeFlore County's high school teams, next week probably seems like it wasn't going to get here. But it's here now.
High school football practice will begin next week, with most of the teams beginning practice on Monday — with a couple not going until the traditional Tuesday.

Talihina's EagleRoad chooses CASC Vikings

August 8, 2013

Former Talihina Golden Tiger Jordan EagleRoad,  a 6-1 shooting guard has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Carl Albert State College Vikings for the 2013-14 season.
Carl Albert being close to Talihina was a huge factor in EagleRoad choosing CASC.
“Coming to CASC will allow my family and friends to come watch me play,” EagleRoad said. “I chose Carl Albert because it was close to home, the people were nice and they made me feel like I was at home.”
Keeping talent local is important to CASC men's coach Mike St. John.

Dove season is the 'kickoff' for fall hunting for this year

August 8, 2013

Dove season is just around the corner, so I decided to give everyone a little background information on these birds that we love to hunt in the early fall. I know that Wister’s Jesse Hammons and his dad, Bud, will be out after those beautiful birds come Sept. 1. They always take Jesse’s little brothers, Will and Joe, along, and make it a whole family affair. They will be making memories that last a lifetime.

A new year is coming

August 7, 2013

The new school year is upon us, and the year looks good for LeFlore County.
First of all, let me tell you about the best high school band in this part of the state. After having another stellar year with its “Tribute to the Fallen,” the Poteau High School band, under the direction of Harley Thomas, Becky Seale and Joey Marsh, has been installing its new program, “The Pirates of the Caribbean.” I can't wait until the first home game to see and hear the band, but I also hear the band parents will be selling ice cream dipping dots in the consession stand. I have always wanted to try that.

All-State football game gave Poteau coach one last chance to coach son

August 6, 2013

TULSA — Many father-son relationships also involve a coach-player connection. Such is the case between Poteau football coach Greg Werner and his son Jay Werner.
Having played under the tutelage of his father throughout his high school career, Jay Werner got to play one more game with his dad as head coach in the All-State game Friday night at Union-Tuttle Stadium, as they served in those capacities with the East squad.
