Christmas is over and I am in Branson with my family for a little vacation. We are going to see a few shows and let the boys check out the town. I expect that Silver Dollar City will be out as an option because with the cold weather. I am not sure the rides will be open and the boys are all about the rides.
Due to Christmas Day's snowstorm, the Heavener basketball teams have had their game times on the opening day of the Bill Frye Invitational in Mansfield, Ark., moved back 45 minutes.
Both teams will play Mulberry, with the girls playing at 1:45 p.m. and the boys at 3:15 p.m.
It's not certain if the final two days of the event will have new games times. At this point, the Friday and Saturday games will tip off at the scheduled times.
The Heavener Wolves had their second five-win football season and the Spiro Bulldogs returned to the Class 3A playoffs this past football season. Several players from each team were honored by being named to the All-District 3A-8 Team.
Heavener’s Blake Smittle, who led Class 3A in rushing, and Spiro’s Jermaine Jimmerson each were named to the team as running backs.
As for offensive linemen, Heavener’s Arron Turner and Spiro’s Jacob Hall and Kelby Fowler made the team.
Heavener’s Jason Muller and Spiro’s Kory Parker made the list of linebackers on the team.
The Panama Razorbacks, who two seasons ago went winless and endured a two-season long 17-game losing streak, made the Class 2A playoffs this past season. One of their players garnered a top individual award from District 2A-6.
Panama’s Andy Burris was named the Newcomer of the Year in District 2A-6. He wasn’t alone as far as being honored by the district as several Razorbacks and Pocola Indians were named to the team.
The Talihina Golden Tigers shared the District A-6 title with Savanna, and got to the Class A state quarterfinals this past season.
Four Talihina players were honored by the district, which announced its All-District Team recently.
Talihina quarterback Clark Austin was named the District A-6 Most Valuable Player.
Trevor Crone was the Receiver of the Year, Caleb Sharp was Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year and Alan Lockhart was the Newcomer of the Year.
Four Arkoma Mustangs football players were named to the All-District C-4 Team this season.
Receiver Tyree Nolden made the first team all-district, while linebacker Talon Woolsey, offensive lineman Austin Morales and utility player Nathan Willis made the second team all-district.
A fifth Mustang, fullback/lineman Tyler Ruston, could have one more football game in his career as he is an alternate for the 8-Man All-Star Game, which will be June 22 at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami.
Former Spiro quarterback Clayton Mitchem was named the Most Valuable Player of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference for the 2012 season.
Mitchem, who quarterbacked the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Norsemen to a top-10 junior-college ranking, established NEO school records for passing yards (2,201) and touchdowns (25) in a single season. He was 152-of-258 in passing.
Next season, Mitchem, who was named an All-Stater after the 2010 football season, will likely be donning the Red and Silver as he has vocally committed to the University of New Mexico.
First of all, let me wish all of you Merry Christmas, and let us not forget the reason for the season — the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
If the Good Lord was willin' and the creek didn't rise, I woke up this morning at my mom's duplex in Enid by beating the potential snow by arriving there on Christmas Eve. If I was lucky, I arrived before not only the snow, but Christmas as well!
Holiday Week of Hoops
Just because it's the first full week of Christmas break doesn't mean there won't be any hoops this week.
