Spiro returning to Class 3A State Baseball Tournament; Bulldogs hold off Stigler to win regional title

SPIRO — The Bulldogs are back, back at state that is.
The Spiro Bulldogs earned their second straight trip to the Class 3A State Tournament by holding off the Stigler Panthers 5-4 to win the regional tournament on a chilly, rainy Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (26-6) will play in the Class 3A State Tournament later this week.

Season ends for Talihina boys in Class 2A regional final

CROWDER — The 2013 high school baseball season came to an end for the Talihina Golden Tigers on Friday night with a 5-0 loss to the Tushka Tigers in the Class 2A Regional Tournament finals.
The Golden Tigers, who won Friday's regional consolation finals 10-0 over host Crowder, end the season at 17-12.

Poteau Pirates golf team, Cameron's Whitehead to tee off at state tournaments Monday, Tuesday

The Poteau Lady Pirates just completed playing in the Class 4A State Tournament. Now, it's the boys' turn.
The Poteau Pirates will play in the Class 4A State Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Lake Hefner South Golf Course in Oklahoma City. The Pirates will play two rounds on Monday for a total of 36 holes, then play the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
However, the Pirates won't be the only area boys hitting the state-tournament links next week.

Poteau senior track boys hope to make it to one more state meet; Poteau will run at regional meet today in Tahlequah

Three Poteau Pirates senior track athletes, Nico Hall, Trevor Shankle and Troy Barnett, are hoping to make it to one more state meet. If they finish in the top three in their respective events at today’s Class 5A Regional Meet in Tahlequah, they will do just that. However, if they finish in fourth through sixth place, they can still make state with an at-large bid.

“A Bike for Daylon” will happen May 18. Daylon is a 13-year-old with cerebral palsy who wants a bike to ride with his family. Funds are being raised to help his parents purchase an adaptive bike for him.

Wister boys lose to Ketchum, Central; have season end at Class 2A Regional Tournament; Wildcats’ streak of state-tournament seasons snapped at six

KETCHUM — The streak is over for the Wister Wildcats. After making state in either the fall or spring seasons since the spring of 2010, there will not be a seventh straight trip to state.
The host Ketchum Warriors put an emphatic end on the season for the Wildcats with a 13-0 victory in the first elimination game of the Class 2A Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Wister’s first regional loss came Thursday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to Sallisaw Central.
The ‘Cats end the season at 20-9.

Talihina boys split first two games in regional tournament; Golden Tigers had to win twice Friday, once today to make state

CROWDER — If the Talihina Golden Tigers baseball team wants to make next week’s Class 2A State Tournament, it had to win three games in two days.
The Golden Tigers split their first two games in the Class 2A Regional Tournament on Thursday, beating Oktaha 12-3 but losing to Tushka 11-1.
The Golden Tigers (16-11) faced the winner of the Crowder-Oktaha game late Friday afternoon, with that winner facing Tushka on Friday night in the regional finals. If a second title game is needed, it will take place at 1 this afternoon.

Poteau staves off elimination twice to make regional final if-game; Pirates beat Byng, Broken Bow to force second championship game — which has been moved to 4 p.m. Monday at Poteau (NEWLY UPDATED)

There will be one thing for certain this afternoon at Town Creek Park. The Pirates will be the Class 4A Regional Tournament champion and headed to state. The only question is will it be Poteau High School's Pirates or the Pirates of Byng High School.
Poteau forced the second title game by picking up two wins in the face of elimination.
In the 2 p.m. loser’s bracket final, Poteau came from behind to defeat Broken Bow, 13-7, to earn another shot against Byng.

Spiro boys win away from returning to state

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team finds itself one win away from returning to the Class 3A State Tournament.
The Bulldogs weathered, literally, Thursday’s rainy conditions to post to wins on their home field in the Class 3A Regional Tournament, beating Eufaula 2-0 and Hartshorne 11-0 in a no-hitter by the combination of Frank Solomon and Quaylon Griffith.
The ’Dogs (25-6) will play for their second straight trip to state at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional final against Stigler, which must beat Spiro twice to win the regional to make state.
