Poteau Pirates making passing grades in all aspects as district portion of season begins on Friday

September 18, 2012

The non-District 4A-4 portion of season has came to an end, and I really believe the Poteau Pirates should be awarded passing grades in all areas. In fact, I believe they should make the Honor Roll. Here's my grades for each group.
Offensive line — A. This group of student athletes are the motor that causes the Poteau Pirates offense to roll. I think I'll make that an A+ due to the depth. The first line is very strong and the subs that fill in are improving. The coaches are not afraid to make changes in personnel.

Whitesboro, Wister baseball teams split games in three-way with Oktaha Friday in Wister

September 18, 2012

WISTER — Everybody left somewhat satisfied after Friday's three-way baseball action with the host Wildcats entertaining the Whitesboro Bulldogs and the Oktaha Tigers.
In the only game where LeFlore County teams met, the Bulldogs blanked the Wildcats 2-0.
In the middle game, the ’Dogs' rally came up short as they were outlasted 15-11 by the Tigers, who then lost the final game of the three-way as the ’Cats beat them 7-2.

Tulsa football team continues to look sharp

September 18, 2012

TULSA — After a tough season-opening loss Sept. 1 on the road against Iowa State, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team has made it 2-for-2 in home games, and both in dominating fashion.
After winning their home opener Sept. 8 against Tulane, the Golden Hurricane looked even more impressive in a 66-16 rout of the Nicholls State Colonels Saturday night at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Early deficit too hard for Hogs to dig out of in upset bid of No. 1 ’Bama

September 18, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — If the Arkansas Razorbacks were going to upset the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday afternoon at Franks Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, one thing they couldn't afford to do was to get down early, which is exactly what the Hogs did. The Tide built a 24-0 halftime lead and never looked back rolling the Tyler Wilson-less Hogs 52-0.

Poteau wins football home opener over Tulsa Webster

September 15, 2012

“There were times in this game that everyone was pulling they weight, but sometimes we were pulling in different directions,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's new coach, after the Pirates pulled out a 21-0 home-opening victory the Tulsa Webster Warriors Friday night at Costner Stadium. “The Poteau Pirates are a band of brothers and we need to pick each other up when there is a misplay. We had way too many turnovers to be competative next week. Sallisaw is a very good team. We must have a great week of work if we expect to compete.”
