Arkansas golfer with Poteau ties a hit on the fairways, using sport to cope with father's death

September 15, 2012

Garett Ford, 17, of Hartford, Ark., has passionately been playing the game of golf for more than half his life. Each year, he has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with on the green.
With him, each step of the way has been his devoted family, father, Gary, and mother, Sharon — both giving 110 percent support to their son, and his love for the game. However, that changed this year.

Poteau's football home opener tonight against Tulsa Webster

September 14, 2012

Pirates football team will hit the grass at Costner Stadium. They will see someone very familiar as the Pirates will entertain the Tulsa Webster Warriors at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
“There's nothing like being at home, especially as much traveling as we've done,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's new coach. “We're very excited to be home.”
The Pirates have done as well as possible, winning two games to begin the season — and two road games at that, 28-21 on Aug. 31 against Durant and last week's 18-15 victory over Van Buren, Ark.

Heavener hopes for happy homecoming win over Gore tonight

September 14, 2012

The Heavener Wolves football team is hoping for happy homecoming tonight when it entertains the Gore Pirates at 7:30 p.m. at Harvey Stadium. Homecoming festivities will begin at 7 p.m.
Carl Lee, Heavener's first-year coach, is hoping that the players do not get too caught up in homecoming and forget about the Pirates.
“We're trying to keep it as even keel as we can,” Lee said. “It's just another ball game. If we take care of business, we'll be all right. We need to enjoy homecoming, but we still have to focus on the game.”

Pocola Indians have first home football game of season tonight against Quinton

September 14, 2012

POCOLA — Rick Lang, Pocola's football coach, was hoping for a game where his Indians didn't have to pull one out of the fire — as in their opener, winning 35-34 over Tulsa Regent Prep with the game-winning score coming with 1:48 left to play. Lang was wanting a game where his team was in control from start to finish, and he got his wish in last Friday night's 49-0 rout of the Haileyville Warriors.

Bokoshe football team looks to rebound from last week's loss to Arkoma tonight at Sasakwa

September 14, 2012

BOKOSHE — Most LeFlore County football teams had to endure a weather delay when last Friday night's rainstorms moved through the area. The Arkoma-Bokoshe game last week was no exception.
However, when the storm passed, it seemed like only the Mustangs were prepared to play football as they blanked the Tigers 48-0.
“I don't know if it was the (weather) delay or what,” said Tyler Massey, Bokoshe's second-year coach. “They (the Mustangs) were here, too, so they had to wait it out like we did. They came out ready to play, and we didn't.”

Spiro looks for second straight football win in road game against Haskell tonight

September 14, 2012

The Spiro Bulldogs seem to be heading in the right direction, especially the way that last Friday night's home-opening 20-12 win over the Muldrow Bulldogs ended.
“I thought we had a better second half,” said Chris Bunch, Spiro's coach. “We didn't play very well in the first half, offensively or defensively. We came back and had a strong second half. We had some good defensive stands. Our quarterback (Trevon Mitchem) had a long touchdown run. We were able to take advantage of some breaks. (Jermaine) Jimmerson was steady for us in the backfield. We just were able to make something happen.”

Local angler wins title at BASSMaster event at Grand Lake

September 14, 2012

Last weekend was a great one for Dwight Camp. He won the BASSMaster Weekend Series Oklahoma Two-Day Divisional Championship.
Camp's daily limit was three fish per day, and he ended up winning the event with a total of 16.41 pounds, of which 9.94 pounds was his Day 1 haul — including the big bass winner for the day, weighing 4.18 pounds.
Because of his Day 1 success, it made Camp's Day 2 a much-less stressful day of fishing. He ended up winning by four ounces, and pocket $2,014. There were 61 competitors in the field.
