WARNER â€” The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team suffered a pair of losses Tuesday afternoon to the Connor State College Cowgirls by scores of 5-1 and 8-5.
The Lady Vikings will return to action at 2 p.m. this afternoon in a road doubleheader against Seminole State College.
The post-Spring Break portion of the season did not begin as hoped for the Poteau High School soccer teams. The Pirates and Lady Pirates suffered losses to the visiting Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside teams Tuesday at Costner Stadium.
The Pirates lost 3-1, which came after the Lady Grizzlies blanked the Lady Pirates 2-0.
HEAVENER â€” It was a great start to the district season for the Heavener High School soccer teams Tuesday at Harvey Stadium.
The Lady Wolves had the more thrilling game of the doubleheader as they had to go into a shootout before getting past Porter Consolidated 3-2.
On the other hand, the Wolves were no match for the Hugo Buffaloes as they won handedly 6-1.
After the Heavener teams entertained Mena, Ark., Wednesday at Harvey Stadium, the Wolves will play in the Stilwell Tournament today and Friday. The Wolves will meet Wagoner at 2 p.m. this afternoon to begin the two-day event.
Archery in the Schools State Tournament was this week. Wister School had three teams that went to Oklahoma City to compete against 21 other teams in their division. The high school team is back again after several years of success, including a third-place finish last year. They have many successful shooters on the team, and are hoping for another good showing at the state level.
CAMERON â€” The Heavener Wolves traveled to Cameron for a road game Monday evening, but could only plate a run in the contest, getting stung by the Yellowjackets by a score of 9-1.
WISTER â€” In a true pitcher's duel, Wister's Tyler Gibson outdueled Spiro's Tyler Didway as the Wildcats blanked the Bulldogs 2-0 Monday afternoon in a rematch of last year's LeFlore County Tournament championship game â€” which was won by the â€™Dogs 4-1.
Gibson struck out 12 batters and scattered three hits.
The â€™Cats got an RBI double by Dalton Brown in the second inning and an RBI double by Jon Watts in the third inning to produce the game's only runs.
WISTER â€” The good news was that the Wister Lady Wildcats got a win Monday afternoon, knocking off the Howe Lady Lions 11-3.
However, the bad news was both local teams suffered losses to the Red Oak Lady Eagles. Red Oak defeated Howe 10-2, while beating Wister 12-0.
Cameron 6, McCurtain 4; Keota 18, Cameron 0: In Cameron, the Lady Yellowjackets split their two games in Monday's home three-way.
No more information was reported on the games.
Muldrow 8, Spiro 2: In Spiro, the loss dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 2-3 on the season. No more information was available.
McALESTER â€” The Poteau Lady Pirates golf team was third at Monday's McAlester Invitational.
Two Lady Pirates were medalists as Hannah Ward was runner-up medalist with a 79, while Addie Guthrie was eighth-place medalist with a 92.
Oktaha's Kailey Campbell was the top medalist on the day.
Cathleen Manlove had a 96, while Heather Robinson carded a 129.
The Lady Pirates will return to action today at the Oktaha Invitational, which will begin at 9 a.m.
LeFlore County will have at least one basketball All-Stater this season. Talihina's Landry James was named to the Small East team for the 2012 Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State Games, which will be June 2 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
â€śI couldn't be happier for her,â€ť Talihina Girls Coach Jeff Oliver said. â€śI thought one of the three (James, Krissy Houston and Chelsea Baggs) had a shot. At the tryouts, Landry just shined. I'm thrilled to death for her.â€ť
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is Friday.
