When Saturday's Class 4A Regional Meet came to an end at Checotah's Ogle Field, no Poteau Pirate track athletes qualified for this weekend's state meet, which will be Friday and Saturday at Moore's Lions Stadium.
Pirate high jumper Austin “Speedy” Skelton was the only individual who had a shot at making state as an at-large bid, which he was when the additional state-qualifying jumpers were announced Monday morning.
Poteau junior Dallas Terry was thrilled when she made this week's Class 4A State Tournament, which will take place today and Thursday at Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner Golf Course. However, there were some nervous moments at last week's regional tournament at Fountainhead Resort.
For each of the last two basketball seasons, Dakota Farris and his Whitesboro teammates have been within a win of making the Class B State Tournament, only to lose both the area finals and consolation finals in back-to-back nights to end their seasons.
Thus, making it to this weekend’s Class A State Track Meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Midwest City Carl Albert High School’s Titan Stadium, is a great feeling.
“I was excited because I finally had succeeded in my goal to make it to state,” Farris said.
One thing Pocola softball seniors Madison Hudkins, Brooklyn Morton and Desi Carter had not experienced was a trip to state. That changed Thursday afternoon when the Lady Indians won the Class 4A Regional Tournanment in Oktaha.
For the second straight spring, two slow-pitch softball teams made state. This year, it's the Wister Lady Wildcats and the Pocola Lady Indians. Wister plays its Class 3A State Tournament today, while the Class 4A State Tournament for Pocola will be Wednesday — both at the Ballfield at Firelake in Shawnee. Today's edition will have the Class 3A State Tournament bracket, while the Class 4A State Tournament bracket will be in Wednesday's edition.
The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team will make its second straight slow-pitch state tournament appearance, and third straight state tournament counting last fall’s Class 2A State Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
“It’s an awesome feeling to be back in the state tournament for the third time in a row,” said first baseman Ciara Covey, Wister’s only senior. “We worked very hard all season. Getting that state ticket punched is the payoff.”
