Behind four double-figure scorers and good defense, the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings won 76-55 and picked up the sweep of their two-game series against the host Penn Valley, Mo., in the Marcus Harvey Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo.
A 27-14 lead at halftime proved to be the difference for the No. 1 ranked South Plains, Texas, in its 61-47 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings in their second and final game of the Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon in Plano, Texas.
After an enjoyable week free from high school basketball last week due to the Thanksgiving break, it's now time to get hot and heavy into some serious hoops.
Four schools — Heavener, Panama, Pocola and Talihina — will begin their seasons this week, and Poteau and Spiro will do so next week.

Editor's note — Look for their season-preview stories to appear as more LeFlore County teams' season openers approach — and their preseason information is received. Wow!! I did not write a column last week, but what about the Sooners and the victories they have had the last two weeks. I know they were very ugly wins, but I only have one thing to say about that — I would rather win ugly than lose ugly. I am of the belief that the game against Texas Christian is going to be the same kind of game.
Behind 17 points from Roland’s Ericka Edwards and 12 points from Heavener’s Skylar Cooper, the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings won their opener in the Marcus Harvey Invitational tournament in Kansas City, Mo., 75-61 over Lewis and Clark Community College of Godfrey, Ill., on Friday afternoon.
Despite getting 16 points from Jaymere Hadden, it wasn’t enough for the Carl Albert State College Vikings as they couldn’t overcome a seven-point deficit at halftime and fell 52-47 to host Collin County College in the opening game of the Thanksgiving Classic on Friday night in Plano, Texas.
TALIHINA — Talihina’s season came to a close at the Doc Robinson Stadium on Friday night as the Cashion Wildcats used a first-quarter salvo and a fourth-quarter knockout punch to defeat the Tigers 42-24.
Three years ago when the Talihina Golden Tigers football team made the state quarterfinals, they had the dubious honor of traveling to Hennessey, located 20 miles south of Enid. The combination of the four-hour road trip and playing a good Hennessey Eagles team led to a season-ending loss for the Golden Tigers.
In 2012, the Golden Tigers are back in the state quarterfinals, but this time they're home. The Golden Tigers (11-1) will entertain the fifth-ranked Cashion Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Doc Robinson Stadium in the Class A state quarterfinals.
I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving and thanks God for all the blessings — past and present — He has given you. I did as arrived Wednesday night in Enid to enjoy the holiday with my 86-year mom. We both slaved in the kitchen on Thursday — not. We decided to go to Golden Corral for our Thanksgiving Day meal. I'm actually going to be gone until early next week, which I can never remember having that much time off during the athletic school year in my 22 years as a sports writer. Mind you, I'm not complaining.
