Spiro Bulldogs get first taste of action in three-way scrimmage tonight at Tulsa Webster along with Okmulgee Bulldogs

August 16, 2012

The Poteau Pirates may have been the first team to get some semblance of a game-like situation in last weekend's Red-White Interteam Scrimmage, but the Spiro Bulldogs will get the first taste of real competition for the county.
The ’Dogs will be in a three-way scrimmage at 6 p.m. tonight at Tulsa Webster along with Okmulgee.
The biggest item on the agenda is looking at the linemen.
“We hope our offensive line will play well,” Spiro Coach Chris Bunch said. “We're making sure that they play assignment football and show that they can be aggressive.”

Lots of miles, and a real mountain man

August 16, 2012

Our vacation is winding down, and I am, too. We have spent at least three days or nights driving 12 or more hours between locations, and have one more long drive to go. Right now, I am in Estes Park at a nice little cabin near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. This place is awesome, and I will have some pictures of it next week.

Poteau Red-White Scrimmage was a teaching tool for Pirates

August 14, 2012

It became apparent right from the start of Saturday night's Poteau Pirates’ Red-White Interteam Scrimmage at Costner Stadium that the defense was well ahead of the offense. That can be said about most teams' first scrimmage of the year, yet alone a team that has a polar opposite change in offensive philosophies. Last year, the Pirates were in a wide-open spread offense, while the coaching style chosen by the new Poteau Coach Greg Werner is more on the lines of a more physical offense play across the front offensive line for the Pirates. Their line will average more than 250 pounds per man.

A busy week this week — both on, off diamond for me

August 14, 2012

When one looks at the end of today's column and sees the week's worth of games on both the fast-pitch and fall baseball diamonds, one can tell it will be a busy week.
First off, Panama's Lady ’Back Classic will be Thursday through Saturday, and Cameron, Howe, Whitesboro and Wister will be in the Red Oak Tournament the latter half of this week.
Also, Poteau will be at the Broken Arrow Tournament Friday and Saturday, while Talihina will be in the Healdton Festival — put on by former Talihina All-Stater and Healdton Softball Coach Joel Bradberry.
