Pocola Indians traveling to meet Heavener Wolves in final scrimmage before next week's season openers

August 24, 2012

When the Pocola Indians and the Heavener Wolves last met at Heavener's Harvey Stadium, it was the 2011 regular-season finale with a playoff berth at stake. The Wolves beat the Indians 21-12, and grabbed District 2A-6's final postseason spot.
However, when they meet again at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Harvey Stadium, it will only be the final preseason scrimmage to get both teams ready for their season openers one week from tonight.
There will be a tailgate party taking place today and tonight, which will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Arkoma has home football scrimmage tonight against Gans

August 24, 2012

With the Arkoma Mustangs playing their final football scrimmage of the preseason against the Gans Grizzlies at 6 p.m. tonight at Mustang Field, one of the objectives of Mark Weatherton, Arkoma's coach, is stellar play out of his linemen.
“I think I want to see improved play out of our offensive and defensive linemen. I felt like our defensive line didn't play too bad last week at Porum, but I want them to do a better job this week. Our offensive line didn't play that good last week, and we really need them to take a big step forward.”

Panama in home three-way scrimmage tonight against Sallisaw-Central, Canadian

August 24, 2012

If Gore Pirates coaches and fans were hoping to come see a preview of what they'll see when the Pirates and Panama Razorbacks meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at George Ollie Stadium in the 2012 season opener, they may be disappointed.
The Hogs will be in a three-way at 6 p.m. tonight at George Ollie Stadium against Sallisaw-Central and Canadian, with admission being soap and towels.
Brandon Ellis, Panama's second-year coach, said the Razorbacks will not do too much so they won't divulge any of next week's game plans for the Pirates.

Spiro hits the road for final football scrimmage tonight at Stilwell

August 24, 2012

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs will get their final football tune-up before next week's season opener as they will scrimmage the Stilwell Indians at 6 p.m. tonight in Stilwell.
The scrimmage was originally slated to take place at McClain Stadium, but due to a new coach at Stilwell and other things the scrimmage was moved to Stilwell.
Chris Bunch, Spiro's coach, said the ’Dogs will do a little more than what they did in last week's first scrimmage of the preseason at Tulsa Webster along with Okmulgee.

Talihina to get stiffest test entire season in tonight's scrimmage at Vian

August 24, 2012

For the last two years, the Talihina Golden Tigers and the Vian Wolverines were District 2A-6 rivals. Now, the Golden Tigers are back down in Class A, and won't have to worry about the Wolverines — at least in the regular season.
However, the two teams will scrimmage each other at 6 p.m. tonight in Vian in what will likely be the stiffest test the Tigers will see all regular season long.

Hawghunters Bass Club to have open tournament Saturday

August 24, 2012

The Hawghunters Bass Club will have an open tournament beginning at safe light and ending at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ward's Landing on Wister Lake. The entry fee is $80 per boat.
For additional information, call Joe Moon at (479) 651-0410.
All the reports I've been getting from all the local anglers at Wister is that fishing is really good, and big fish are being caught — which should bode well for Saturday's tournament participants.

Poteau Pirates to entertain Mena in final scrimmage before next week's season-opening game

August 23, 2012

It's hard to think that there's a finality in preseason games, but that's the case for the Poteau Pirates football team.
Poteau's new coach, Greg Werner, said that tonight's 6 p.m. scrimmage at Costner Stadium against Mena, Ark., is an important one for many reasons.
“This is it,” Werner said. “We've got to get all these things taken care of now. We're behind, so maybe we can get some things learned and get some things figured out.”
