Friday's High School Girls Basketball Roundup

POCOLA — The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets got their first win of the season, and in so doing spoiled Pocola's homecoming by winning 46-39 over the Lady Indians on Friday night at the Pocola Gym.
The Lady ’Jackets led practically the entire game, leading 8-6 after a period, 16-13 at halftime and 23-21 after three quarters.
Arkoma 52, Keota 49: In Arkoma, trailing 39-35 after three periods, the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Lions 17-10 in the final quarter to get the comeback win.

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians put a halt to the five-game winning streak of the Cameron Yellowjackets to celebrate homecoming with a 65-31 victory Friday night at the Pocola Gym.
The Indians had a 26-18 halftime lead, but outscored the Yellowjackets 17-0 in the third quarter to take a 53-18 lead into the final period.
Arkoma 63, Keota 52: In Arkoma, the Mustangs led 22-20 after a period and 33-27 at halftime. Then, Arkoma outscored Keota 30-25 in the second half.
Leflore 66, Pittsburg 30: In Pittsburg, the Savages jumped out to an 18-0 lead after a period and were never headed.

Heavener, Talihina teams split season openers Friday night

HEAVENER — Two county schools' basketball teams opened their seasons against one another Friday night when the Talihina squads came calling on the Heavener teams at the Heavener Gym. Both schools can say they had one of their teams win on opening night.
The Wolves withstood a late rally by the Golden Tigers as Heavener beat Talihina 49-46.
The girls game was much the same as the Lady Golden Tigers got out to a double-digit lead in the second half, only to have to hold off a late charge by the Lady Wolves to hang on for a 42-36 victory.

Tournaments, and more tournaments, on tap

We just got through with the Poteau Freshmen Tournament and the first-ever Green Valley Conference Junior High Tournament last week, and now there's even more tournaments this week.
This week will be the weeklong Eastern Oklahoma State Classic, featuring Arkoma, Bokoshe, Howe, Leflore and Whitesboro, at both EOSC's Claud C. Dunlap Fieldhouse and at the Wilburton High School Gym.
The 2012 Choctaw Nation Tournament, featuring host Talihina, Pocola and Wister, will be Thursday through Saturday on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.

Poteau Youth Wrestling Club members do well in weekend tournament action

A total of 17 members of the Poteau Youth Wrestling Club placed in two weekend tournaments.
Of those 17, 15 of them were placers at the Fort Gibson Novice Tournament. Seven of those 15 members won their respective weight divisions.

Poteau places eight wrestlers at Jay Duals Tournament; Senior Pirate named outstanding wrestler

JAY — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team placed eight of its matmen in last weekend's Jay Duals Tournament.
Senior Tyler Tustin won the 138-pound title and was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
Gabe Sanchez (195 pounds) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight) were runners-up, Devin Anderson (120) and Derek Francis (170) were third and Sam Shore (132), Kyle Kingrey (160) and Khy Mote (182) were all fourth.

New season begins for Poteau basketball girls with high hopes — and new coach; Lady Pirates end up getting first-round bye at Keys Cougars Invitational, won't play until Thursday afternoon in semifinals

Editor's note — This is the second of a two-part series previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.
Last season, the Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team was the Cinderella story of the 2012 LeFlore County high school basketball playoffs. After ending the regular season at 5-18 last season, the Lady Pirates won three of five playoff games, won the Class 4A District Tournament, were consolation champions at the regional tournament and got to within three wins of the state tournament.
