The key word that Greg Werner, Poteau High School's first-year football coach, said about his Pirates going into last week's regular-season finale was â€śimproved.â€ť
The Pirates improved on their record from the last two years as they ended with a winning record at 6-4 after a 62-14 rout of the Tulsa Rogers Ropers on Nov. 2 at Costner Stadium on Senior Night.
â€śIt was a good night,â€ť Werner said. â€śIt's always good to end on a win. Not many teams get to end things with a win, and we ended on a win. Everybody got to play a lot, so it was a very good night.â€ť
TALIHINA â€” Talihina quarterback Clark Austin hit Christian McClain for a 10-yard scoring strike in overtime to win its Class A first-round playoff game 42-34 over the Wewoka Tigers on Friday night at Doc Robinson Stadium, and it couldnâ€™t have been any more exciting.
Talihina (10-1), which will hit the road next week for a second-round playoff game against No. 8 Warner, then turned on the defense and kept Wewoka from scoring on the 10-yard line for four plays in overtime.
OKEMAH â€” It was a short and sweet stay in the Class 2A playoffs for the Panama Razorbacks on Friday night as they lost 60-0 to the Okemah Panthers to finish the season at 4-7.
STROUD â€” The Class 2A playoff run for the Pocola Indians came to a screeching halt Friday night as they lost to the sixth-ranked Stroud Tigers by a score of 61-6.
The Indians, who finished the season at 5-6, got their only score on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Preston Hobbs to Garret Laxson.
PARK HILL â€” The season came to a crushing defeat for the Spiro Bulldogs as they lost 42-7 to the Keys (Park Hill) Cougars Friday night in an opening-round game in the Class 3A playoffs.
The loss ended Spiro's season at 6-5. No more information on the game was reported.

Despite getting 14 points from Myeisha Williams and 13 points from Ashala Watson, it wasn't enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 74-57 loss Friday night to the homestanding Mineral Area College in the opener of the Mineral Area Classic in Park Hills, Mo.
The Lady Vikings will return to action today at 2 this afternoon against Vincennes University in the second and final game of the Mineral Area Classic.
OKLAHOMA CITY â€” Kevin Durant scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Serge Ibaka added 25 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to its third victory in a row and a 4-2 record to start the season. Detroit kept the game close for about three quarters, but OKC finally pushed ahead late and cruised for the easy 105-94 victory Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Thunder extended its 49-42 lead at halftime with a 12-5 run to begin the second half to take a 61-47 lead at the 7:41 mark.
WHITESBORO â€” The Whitesboro High School basketball teams were trying to get their first victories of the new basketball season Thursday night at the Whitesboro Gym. They were successful.
The Bulldogs ended the sweep of the Leflore High School teams with a 61-43 win over the Savages.
The Lady Bulldogs began the night with a 51-14 victory over the Lady Savages.
