Carl Albert baseball team gets road sweep against Rose State; Vikings, Lady Vikings return to action this afternoon

MIDWEST CITY — It was a happy weekend for the Carl Albert State College baseball team. The Vikings posted a doubleheader sweep of Rose State College by scores of 4-1 and 6-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The same two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at Ival Goodman Field. It begins three straight days of action for the Vikings, who will play the Bacone College junior varsity in a home twinbill at 1 p.m. Wednesday followed by a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader Thursday against Seminole State College.

Poteau Spirit Center gymnasts place, compete last weekend at Claremore

CLAREMORE — Several members of the Poteau Spirit Center gymnastic team competed last weekend, with three members placing.
Michaela Wolf placed first in her age group, Shyanne Hutchison was runner-up in her age group and Cheyenne Wilbourn was runner-up in all-around in the age 8-and-younger division — all in Level 3.
Other gymnasts competing were Holly Bowman, Allison Blagg, Skylee Maynard, Courtney Kitchens, Katie Magness and Anniston Baker.
Three gymnasts, Corbie Buffington, Keegan Hudlow and Jenna Bowman, competed at Level 1, and took home several ribbons and a medal.

Fifth-inning Dickson rally dooms Poteau in Wood Bat Festival; Two games this afternoon at each Town Creek Park, Cameron

Finally, the 2012 Poteau Wood Bat Festival got underway Friday afternoon, but the host Pirates were not the ones celebrating a win.
Thanks to a six-run fifth inning, the visiting Dickson Comets rallied, and held off a potential seventh-inning rally by Poteau, to down the Pirates 6-5 at Town Creek Park.
The Pirates (4-3) will get another chance this afternoon to get a win in their own festival as they will take on the Sallisaw-Central Tigers at 2 p.m. this afternoon at Town Creek Park, which will come on the heels of the Tigers' game with Hartshorne at noon this afternoon.

Upward Sports Unlimited seems to be a big hit in Poteau

Friday ended the weeklong Upward Basketball Camp, which took place at the Pansy Kidd Middle School Gym thanks to the Church of the Nazarene.
The event was basically a “Bible Basketball Camp.” Not only was sportsmanship and basketball fundamentals taught to the nearly 60 campers, but there was also devotion time present daily as well.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is Friday.

Rain postpones Wood Bat Festival again with updated schedule beginning this afternoon; UC, RO Festivals completely rained out; A Wister-Dale title-game rematch in works for Saturday

As feared, Mother Nature is wreaking havoc on the local sports scene this Spring Break week.
For the second straight day, the Poteau Wood Bat Festival's beginning was rained out. Games were to have begun on Wednesday, but were postponed due to rain.
The games were then pushed back a day at all sites, so there would be games at Poteau's Town Creek Park and Cameron Thursday, then games at both sites along with Howe's Lions Field on Friday and Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY — With Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers in town against the Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday night, a packed Chesapeake Energy Arena was expected — and that’s exactly what Oklahoma City delivered.
Griffin, a native Oklahoman and a former Oklahoma Sooner, struggled against the Thunder in the game, and scored a career-low seven points.
